Saving the best for last.... I had the pleasure of meeting three wonderful sisters around 4 years ago. Each year has been an adventure together as they became wives. Each sister vastly different in personality and unique in wedding desires. All three beautiful women inside and out.

With most of the big ticket items now planned it’s time to work your way down the vendor list. Photography is often the most expensive vendor after the catering and venue. It’s important to ask questions and see their work. Second shooters are a great add on if it meets your budget. Some company’s can offer photo and video services. Be sure to compare several vendors and pricing options before you select your photographer.

At this point many DYI brides begin to feel
Overwhelmed with the planning process and the multitude of family and friends opinions.
This would be a good week to take time and enjoy each other with no planning decisions or discussions.
If you find yourself unable to let it go then consider a partial or full wedding planner. If you’re feeling like it’s smooth sailing and under control then keep pressing on next week, but consider if a day of coordinator is what you will need.

This week is one of the favorite yet frustrating ones for brides. This week you start the dress hunt. Be open to trying on gowns you hadn’t previously considered. Be mindful of your dream dress vs budget. For those with low budgets and designer dreams consider getting a dress from a bridal consignment shop (we love Blush bridal in Newport News) or check out sample sales.
Make sure you set up appointments at local boutiques in advance. Make sure to bring only as many people as you feel comfortable with having. Don’t feel obligated to bring the whole bridal party and family. Do bring full b***y underwear and heels or flats depending on your day of plans.
If you plan to wear a family members gown try it on and visit a seamstress to see what alterations can or need to be done.

This week it’s time to get to business. You now have a budget and a theme to follow in your hunt for a venue. There are tons of options available to fit a variety of wants/needs. Be sure to look for reviews from past clients. Use our guides to help you formulate questions as you tour venues. Be mindful that every venue has pros and cons. Select a venue that meets your needs and wants best. Also keep in mind what decor can do to enhance a venue. Uplighting, wall and ceiling draping, along with dim lights and candles can turn the drab venue into a dream.

Now that you have a few dates and a budget it’s time to pick a theme. Deciding your theme will help to guide you in the venue selection coming up. Remember to consult that list of priorities in your budget from last week. Your theme should reflect you as a couple. Do you both really love Harry Potter and dream of a Hogwarts themed day or are you more refined and sophisticated like a country club? Could you only imagine getting married on the beach where you met in a relaxed barefoot ceremony? Whatever you decide do it as a reflection of both people, sometimes it takes a bit but couples can find the theme made for them with a little Pinterest and honest communication. No one wants to argue five years from now how they wanted a different wedding day. Make sure to really hear each other and consider each other’s dream day.

This week you should set a budget. You and your future spouse should also prioritize wants/needs. Do you really want a wedding video at $500 or would you rather spend the $500 on limousines for the day? Is a full open bar (instead of a beer/wine only bar) more important than that dream dress?
By making lists of priorities you can help to keep costs in check and get everything you want without wasting money on the eh stuff.
A key part in planning the budget is not to forget about the taxes and gratuity often required in contracts. Many couples go over by 30% in catering alone by not making sure to include the tax/gratuity in their budgets.

So you’re engaged... now what? First of all take breath and enjoy this moment together. Once you catch your breath and share the news it’s time to get started.
Your task this week: Select your ideal wedding date but also have two or three back up dates, especially if you’re thinking fall in Hampton Roads or something as soon as this spring.
Remember Friday and Sunday dates can lead to more venue availability and lower costs. (My husband and I saved 5k alone on our venue by going with a Friday night.)
