❄️It’s been a snow-globe kind of day. So beautiful, softly falling, no wind, peaceful and quiet.

👋Hello flower friends. after taking a walk up Freeland Road with Marigold and my neighbor, Linda, I shoveled the walks and wandered down to the garden.

📸Here are some photos from my visit there, (Marigold supervising from afar) as well as some night time shots. The lights on the u-pick structure are new this year.

☕️I’m enjoying some down time here in Omena. Staying in my pajamas until mid-morning, drinking that second cup of coffee, and doing puzzles again. We had a lovely Thanksgiving with family. The steady lake-effect snow has had me out snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Grateful.

✅Sunday update: I had a flurry of dried flower pumpkin sales this weekend so I made more today. In the shed now, 5 orange. 1 @ $20; 2 @ $29; 1@$35 and 1@ $40. Text me to hold one for you or come by soon. Best. Thanksgiving. Centerpiece. (Or hostess gift too!) 231-883-8327.

💙Nothing but blue skies tonight. So beautiful.

🎄Decorating for Christmas! Love that all the greens I needed and such are within 100 yards or so of my shed. Flood light will be flipped on tonight. Another decorating project to come—stay tuned.

🌞The sunny weather had me out on Saturday pulling out more annuals, planting the last of my winter rye and cutting back the Crocosmia. As they say, there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.

🍁Dave blanketed the potted perennials with leaves. Night night! Love my giant leaf pile in the distance. I’ll be using that for ongoing mulching.

😃Feeling really good about the shape the garden is in going into winter, and it will make my life easier come spring.

🌻I planted these Pro Cut Orange single stem sunflowers in mid-August. On November 7, just before the snow hit, I harvested all that were starting to open. I’m so glad I did and amazed at how fresh they are still looking 2 weeks later.

🌻I plant 300 to 500 single stem sunflower seeds every week or so during the season. That way I have a constant supply. They are so easy to grow and I purchase my seeds from Sunflower Selections.

🌻I do grow some branching varieties as well. I love Greenburst and Saroya. But they don’t produce nearly as many flowers as the pro cuts do.

Reminder that dried flower pumpkins make a great Thanksgiving centerpiece. Stop by and choose one of the many I have available in the shed or text me to reserve one to pick up at your leisure.

Prices range from $15-$35. These beauties will last 6 months or more because pumpkins are not carved; dried flowers are hot glued on to the surface.

🌅This time of year, I’m always taken with the beautiful light that reflects off Omena Point. Bonus, clouds that look a bit like mountains in the distance!

🍁These were taken the last two days and also show the garden pretty much put to bed. We finished digging all the Dahlia‘s and cutting down zinnias and marigolds—such good performers this season for me.

✂️I try to cut all the annuals at the base of the stem and leave the roots—and dirt—behind. I’ve read that as roots decompose, they feed beneficial insects, and add microbes to the soil.

🌱I’ve gone through two 50-pound bags of winter rye and it is sprouting nicely. Feeling good about the shape the garden is in and so grateful for a couple of pleasant sunny days to work in.

🎃There’s been a resurgence of interest in dried flower pumpkins with Thanksgiving approaching. There are about a dozen in the shed right now and I will keep making them as long as supplies hold out.

❄️Well, friends, the season is over. Except for dried flower pumpkins, which will be available in the shed until Thanksgiving.

❄️The recent snow storm caught me off guard. A basket of clippers and clipboards under the Upick structure were blanketed with the white stuff.

🌺Call it my subconscious state of mind, leaving those things out, not wanting to call it quits. I turned off the cooler and brought all of the remaining bouquets up to the house and have been enjoying this last glimpse of summer.

🧩And like a tired toddler who finally gives into her nap, I am enjoying the quiet, and used these snowy days to split five crates of dahlia tubers we dug before the storm. I have started a new puzzle, began to clean my very messy house and am looking forward to the fast-approaching holidays.

🌸But…there is still work to be done out there. First priority is to dig the last third of the dahlias still in the ground. BTW Dahlia tubers are looking great so far.

🫖Make yourself a pot of tea and think about what you might want to include in your garden next year. You can reserve tubers now at at 2025 prices and pay when you pick up in the spring. Shop here: https://www.omenacutflowers.com/dahlias Just email me your wish list.

🌱If the weather permits, more annuals should be hauled off to the compost pile and winter rye planted in their place. But at some point, things are left undone once Mother Nature deems it so. And that’s fine. (Marigold does not seem to mind the cold or snow).

🙏I’d like to thank everyone for your support this year and for the last, yes, 29 summers. Can’t believe we start our third decade in 2026!

P.S. dried flower pumpkins for your Thanksgiving table ard in the shed now or messsge me to reserve. Thanks again to the 125 people who have already purchased one.

11 pumpkins in the shed now. More to come. Message me if you would like to reserve one or more.

This is a really great and informative post about dividing dahlias. I do it pretty much the same way except I don’t wash mine as I think a coating of dirt helps keep tubers from drying out. And I rarely save the mother tuber as she is too prone to rot.

🌞Grateful for this beautiful sunny day.

💪Dave and I started digging dahlias last week. Today my flower farmer friend Angie of .parkflowers spent a couple of hours behind the pitchfork. So great to have the help and catch up with this dear friend.

🎃A dozen dried flower pumpkins are in the shed and would love to have Thanksgiving 🦃 dinner with you.

✅I will post more soon about my dahlia digging and storage game. Dig, process, store, repeat. I’m about 30% done so far. Stay tuned.
