Two K Farms Takes Top Honors at Harvest Challenge Competition 🏆 ✨

The Harvest Challenge judges wines from the same region, belonging to a specific appellation, grown in similar weather conditions, soil, and grapes to crown the best wines within their respective growing region.

Best of the Best, Best Sparkling Wine, Best of Leelanau Peninsula AVA (American Viticultural Area) were awarded to Two K Farm’s 2022 Bubbly Riesling by top writers, winemakers, and even “The Sommelier to the Stars” Christopher Sawyer. Garnering a score of 97, judges stated tasting notes of “mouthwatering citrus and honeysuckle”: “lingering tropical finish”: “perfect bubbles”; and “well-balanced.”

A record number of entries were submitted to this year’s competition, spanning the globe from Argentina to California. Wines within the same appellation are judged, eliminating cross-regional competition, allowing the inherent qualities of the wines to shine without outside influences. According to Harvest Challenge spokesman, Christopher Sawyer, “The Harvest Challenge is a judge’s dream come true. Beyond varietal category and price point, this one-of-a-kind competition is based on appellation instead of mass-production. The end result is more definition of the wines made with grapes inside the boundaries of a specific viticultural area and distinct flavors that have helped wines rise to the top of the scale in the global marketplace.”

Thanksgiving Dinner Cider Pairings ➡️

🦃 The main event deserves a cider worthy of its focal point at the Thanksgiving meal. Kingston Black, dry, bright acidity pairs well with the turkey’s rich, savory herbs. Creating a combo that is unmatched, ensuring you’ll have room for seconds.

🥘 Herbed stuffing can be dense and rich, requiring some acidity to cut through the heavy nature of the dish. Spitzenburg fits the bill, a well-rounded semi-dry cider with slight herbaceous notes, complementing the earthy flavors.

🫛 A classic dish, green bean casserole, needs a cider with slight acidity to counter the richness of the mushrooms and fried onions. Old World’s champagne like bubbles complement the green vegetable, while also being light-bodied enough, so you don’t feel overly full.

🥔 Potatoes are the perfect starchy dish for thanksgiving, adding cheese, puts it over the top. Harrison, an off-dry cider with balanced acidity cuts through the saltiness and textured nature of the dish.

🍞 Dinner rolls can be a perfect utensil for soaking up cranberry sauce, gravy and all the other fixings. A sweet cider like Macoun complements the buttery rolls, contrasting the soft, fluffy profile with the appropriate amount of carbonation for each bite.

🥧 Apple pie, deserts in general pair well with sweeter “New World” style ciders like DDOC. The fruity and sweet flavors in the desserts complement the fruity and sweet flavors in cider. The acidity in cider also helps to balance out the richness of desserts, making them one of the best food pairings for cider.

Last batch of apples for the fruit stand 🍎 🍏➡️

𝙀𝙨𝙤𝙥𝙪𝙨 𝙎𝙥𝙞𝙩𝙯𝙚𝙣𝙗𝙪𝙧𝙜
It was discovered early in the 18th century near Esopus, Hudson, New York and is reputed to have been a favorite apple of Thomas Jefferson, who planted several of the trees at Monticello.

In 1922, Ulysses Hedrick described Esopus Spitzenburg (sometimes simply called “Spitzenberg”) as “one of the leading American apples ... [A]bout the best to eat out of hand, and very good for all culinary purposes as well.” In particular, it is a good apple for baking pies and is also valued as a cider apple.

𝙂𝙤𝙡𝙙𝙚𝙣 𝙍𝙪𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙩
It was discovered in New York State between the years 1800 and 1849 from a seedling of an English russet apple cultivar. Fruit heritage organisation Orange Pippin suggest the flavour and apple shape indicate the parent may have been Ashmead’s Kernel.

Its flesh is fine in texture, juicy and crisp. Early in the season, Golden Russets exhibit an attractive, though extreme, tartness that makes them an excellent eating apple; if left to ripen long, their flavor grows quite sweet.

The Story

History of the Farm

In the early 1800’s, many families from the East Coast travelled to northern Michigan in search of new opportunities. Francis Blackman, one of the early settlers of Leelanau County and a soldier in Pennsylvania for the “War of 1812”, was the first to be granted farmland for his military service. Blackman sold the farm to Robert Lee (not to be confused with General Robert E. Lee) a veteran of the Civil War who first purchased a portion of the farm in 1855. He was later granted additional surrounding land for his Civil War military service. Lee eventually owned nearly 400 acres of land that extended to the shores of West Grand Traverse Bay. In the subsequent 150 years, much of the land was parceled and sold off. The Lee family continued to farm the remaining farmland until the early 2000’s. The farm barn which still stands is the only remaining original building on the farm. It can be seen from M-22 north of the farm entrance as you enter the farm.
