The George's Flower Shop has been in business since 1937. As the oldest flower shop in Emanuel County, we have been dedicated to giving our town the best service and selection in floral design for over 82 years! Our history begins in 1937 with Mr. and Mrs. H.I. George, who opened the establishment on North Racetrack Street. In 1957, Edna George Bailey took over. Then came Betty and Bob Ray Peebles; they bought the shop in June 1959 when Mrs. Bailey retired. It only took Betty working a factory job exactly one day before she knew that wasn't the career route for her. Instead, she wanted a place that would give her the freedom to be a mother but still be able to contribute. Because Ray had some experience with flowers due to his employment through a local mortuary, it seemed like a good idea to pursue the shop when Edna put it up for sale. As it turns out, it was, indeed, a solid venture for them. Betty had a knack for designing and Ray honed his skills over time as well. For numerous years, the two worked to make weddings, showers, parties, anniversaries, funerals, and everything in between all the more special for the citizens of Emanuel County. A true testament to the competence of the business came in 2002 when the George's Flower Shop was named Small Business of the year by the chamber of commerce. Ray and Betty's daughter, Angelia, officially joined the family business in 1977. Through the years, she and all the other Peebles children - Jennifer, Jeffery, and Alicia- all worked in the flower shop in some respect or another, whether it be designing, delivering, or simply helping customers. The shop has even welcomed the tenure of extended family too in recent years, when Angelia's daughter-in-law Jessie joined the shop in 2017. Carrying on the family legacy Jessie now works in the flower shop while Angelia's son Carter pursues his career with the same local mortuary his grandfather Ray retired from. Both Ray and Betty have passed away now, but the business is in good hands. Angelia currently runs the shop much the same as it was in Ray and Betty's day. The iconic name has remained the same, and the business still stands in it's original location. What's more, however, is the customer service and, in turn customer patronage. Today, the George's is more than flowers. The business still keeps fresh flowers in stock and continues to offer silk arrangements of course, but they've also added a gift shop to their line of services. The supplement has proven to be a hit with customers as it allows more selection and customization with their shopping. Though the George's Flower Shop is ecstatic and proud of having made it so many years, the business is equally thrilled about the possibilities the future holds.
