Whitcomb Hall Built in 1916 Whitcomb Hall has been used by the Lincoln Grange and for reunions, weddings, suppers

Whitcomb Hall was built in 1916 and underwent a historic rehabilitation in 2016 (first floor) and 2020 (second floor). The Hall offers two different areas, the 1st floor holds 75 people for your smaller gathering and the 2nd floor holds 115 people for larger gatherings. The second floor has a beautiful stage and balcony that overlooks the room. The Hall offers a kitchen with a 10 burner stove/oven

, tables and chairs and is ADA compliant. There also is a nice lawn to hold ceremonies, and a Bed and Breakfast right next door. The hall is located on a charming New England street lined with ornamental streetlights that lead you to a picturesque covered bridge over the Ashuelot River.

It is with sadness we announce the passing of Pete Johnson this past Sunday. Pete was the chairman of the Whitcomb Hall Committee that brought back the Hall on the Main St. hill in the village of West Swanzey. Peter took over as chairman of the committee in 2015 with the plan to re-open the first floor in time for the 100th anniversary in 2016. Under Peter's watch that was done by the fall of 2016 at a cost of $225,683.00. But the true test was yet to come as the second floor renovations would have higher costs with adding a Sprinkler system and accessibility to deal with. Pete led the committee as the push was on for funds. He understood the need for the Town to be involved financially in the the project to show potential donors it was committed to the project. For his and the committee's effort, when the Hall opened to the public in 2020, the Selectman's Report lists that 15% came from taxpayer funds, 25% came from donations and 60% came from grants. Pete called Whitcomb Hall the "Peoples House" because it started at a meeting with the people pledging just over $1,500.00 in less than an hour. From there George Whitcomb built the Hall and gave it to the town. Peter, I will miss conversations with you on the front porch of the Hall, but I will always remember you, every time I walk into the "Peoples House" Whitcomb Hall.

Old photo taken outside of Whitcomb Hall, not sure of the date.

I've had several people liking this picture recently so I thought I would post it again with a few thoughts. This is not all those how fought in the war from Swanzey as it would be hard to get everyone together all at once. I have blown this up and I don't believe my dad is there. I don't know when this photo was taken but assume it was taken within a year of the end of the war. At Christmas I think of those in the service. In 1944, 18 year old Carroll Dunham from Swanzey, NH would spent his first Christmas away from home, driving a Half Track in the snowy, cold land of Belgium as a member of the 2nd Armored Division "Hell on Wheels". A lot of you have similar stories, our parents truly were from the "greatest generation"
