Italian American Athletic Club-IAAC_Syracuse,NY Official page of the Italian American Athletic Club (IAAC), Syracuse, NY. Founded on March 15, 1953 for the purpose of promoting good fellowship.

The Italian American Athletic Club has been in existence for over 60 years. The IAAC has come a long way since its inception on March 15, 1953 when Paul Sindoni and Sam Donze formulated the concept on the stoop of Donze's Meats, 700 North Townsend Street. The IAAC club was organized for the purpose of promoting good fellowship. The following men, in addition to Paul and Sam, started the club at Mi

tchell's Restaurant on Salina St: Vic Bucci, Bob Cafarelli, John Cantanzarita, Joseph DeMichele, Nunzio Donze, Fred Fortino, Tony Giacobbi, Larry Mancini, Joe Natalizio, Joe Pisani, Joe Principato, Nino and Angelo Prioetta, Fran Sgroi, John Russo and Carl Tartaglia. The first slate of officers were elected at the first meeting. They were:

President - John Cantanzarita
Vice President - Paul Sindoni
Treasurer - Nunzio Donze
Secretary - Joe Pisani

The enthusiasm and foresight of these men created such an extensive interest among their friends that after six meetings the membership increased to such proportions that new aims and purposes were established. At this time the present of the club, the Italian American Athletic Club, was voted upon and adopted, henceforth called the I.A.A.C. A certificate of corporation type B was signed by the Secretary of State, John Lomenzo, on April 23, 1954. Tony "Gus" Mancuso, also known as "Judge", was instrumental in obtaining the above along with many other legal services which he provided the club at no charge. In its early years, the IAAC was a transient club holding meetings at Mitchell's Restaurant, Pirro's Hall, Adelphi Club and Russo's Warehouse before acquiring a lease on the Heidelberg Restaurant, located at the corner of Townsend and Division Streets. This came about in June 1955 and the club stayed at that location until the fall of 1959. Again, the club became transient, holding meetings back at Mitchell's, Haberle's Brewery conference room, Joe Palmer's Restaurant, Sorrento's, Lyndovin's, Carpenter's Hall and CCBI's cafeteria (courtesy of D.J. Nelli, club judge advocate). On February 28, 1972, the IAAC purchased the property on 823 Park Street from the Gethsemane United Methodist Church and began the task of renovating the church structure. After extensive remodeling the club rooms were opened on July 30, 1973 with a gala cocktail party. In order to secure the building loan of $40,000, co-signers were required. The "signers" were: Louis Ailello, Joe Colucci, John LoBello, Gerald Mingolelli, Sr., Sarkis Nigolian, Joe Pisani, Ron Rosecrans, Michael Sabatino, Peter Salamino, Paul Sindoni, Jack Sposato, Carl Tartaglia, Leonard Tucci and Armond Yennock. In 1990 the city of Syracuse purchased the Park Street building in order to expand Franklin School. At that time, IAAC moved to Arterial Road in Lyncourt, where they are still are today.

👋 Meet Member Lou Gori 👋

2️⃣0️⃣1️⃣5️⃣ Lou joined the Italian American Athletic Club in 2015.

👍 Why Lou joined:
"After the loss of my wife, I was looking for connection and camaraderie. A very close friend, Tony Cantania, encouraged me to join, saying, “Come on, you’ll love it—it’s a great group of guys!” And he was right. I already knew many members, and it felt like a natural fit. Plus, I had a strong interest in playing Bocce—and what better place to do it than part of this great organization."

✨ What Lou is looking forward to:
"I'm excited about the future growth and success of the club. Most of all, I look forward to seeing our Italian American traditions preserved and passed down, keeping our heritage alive for generations to come."

👋 Meet Guy!

4️⃣0️⃣+ years as an IAAC Member

👍Why Guy Joined:
“I joined the Club because my Father Guy "Boo" was very active member and wanted me to get to know all his friends and be part of the Italian Heritage he was very proud of. I joined the club about 40 years ago, through the years I recruited many family and friends including my son Guy 💙 and he recruited alot of friends to be members. In case anybody wanted to know I relocated my remodeling business to the IAAC building in 2000 and closed in 2024 after 43 years time to retire. I've done alot of work on the IAAC building, from the front door we removed the old canopy and put exterior tile, the entry foyer that goes to the front offices and club foyer including both bathrooms. The last major improvement was the club room every part of it from demolition to the ceiling, walls, floor, painting and reworked the cabinets. Some of the work for very low cost and me donating alot of time and money to make the Club the best it could be.”

⚾️Guy is looking forward to:
“I have great memories with my Father and going with all club members to Yankee Stadium. Looking forward to spending more time at the club and helping out anyway I can.”

✨ It's time for another Monday Member Spotlight! ✨

👋 Meet Debbie Stack!

2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣5️⃣: Debbie joined IAAC in January, 2025. She says at her first meeting she felt immediately welcomed. One member was eager to “show her the ropes” including giving her a tour of the building.

👍 Why Debbie joined IAAC: "I have always been proud of my Italian heritage and loved the stories my grandmother would recount about her journey from Italy to America, almost getting washed overboard as the ship, The Madonna, traversed the Atlantic Ocean during a major storm. I learned from her how to make Italian dishes and desserts including my great grandmother’s much-loved lemon cookies. When my brother, the current president of the group, told me that women were welcome as members, I thought it would be a new way to celebrate my Italian roots among friendly people with similar interests and great stories and traditions to share."

✨ What Debbie is looking forward to: "I am excited about learning more about Central New York Italian-Americans and their traditions and contributions to the community and beyond. I have always been interested in history, in fact I minored in history at Syracuse University, so I am now chairperson of IAAC’s Heritage and History Committee. We are doing interviews with IAAC members about their personal histories as well as their experiences with IAAC over the Club’s 70+ years. And with my public communications background, I also joined the Marketing, Communication, and Publicity Committee. IAAC is a great place to put my belief in the importance of volunteering to work. And I look forward to supporting IAAC’s community service initiatives too."

⚾️ IAAC steps up to the plate, supporting local youth baseball! ⚾️

We are thrilled to share some great news that highlights our renewed commitment to the “Athletic” in the Italian American Athletic Club!

As part of our effort to return to our roots and support athletics in our community, the IAAC is now proudly sponsoring a field and a team with the Salina Bombers Little League.

Check out this photo from member Guy De Mascole, who shared this note while attending his grandson’s game: “Just at my grandson’s baseball game and proud to see the IAAC banner supporting our community youth. Good job 👍💪 Thanks – Guy”

✨ We ❤️ Mondays...and you know why! It's a Monday Member Spotlight! ✨

👋 Meet Rockette Pirro Brunetti! She is pictured with her husband and IAAC member John Brunetti!

2️⃣0️⃣ Rockette has been a member of IAAC for more than 20 years, and joined IAAC sometime after her dad Rock Pirro passed away. He was a lifelong athlete and deeply involved in sports, and he was proud to be a longtime member of IAAC.

✏️ A message from Rockette:
🏉 A bit of background—my dad, Rock Pirro, was a standout football player at Solvay High School and then at Catholic University. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers and played with them for two years before serving in the Navy, where he continued playing football with the Fleet City Blue Jackets. He wrapped up his professional career with four seasons on the original Buffalo Bills. In 1953, he became the offensive line coach at Syracuse University and remained there for over 20 years.

❤️ When he passed away in 1995, I wanted to honor his legacy, and one way was through his connection to IAAC. At that time, there were no women in the organization—not because they were necessarily excluded, but perhaps because none had expressed interest. My husband was already a member, so I grabbed an application, sent in my dues, and joined!

It did take a little time for people to recognize my membership. I remember attending my first Mass for deceased members, and I was told the seating on the left was reserved for “members only”—I was expected to sit with the “girls.” I just smiled and kindly informed the gentleman that I was a member. He was honestly stunned!

👍 What Rockette likes about the club:
John and I really enjoy the speakers and try to attend those events whenever we can. We look forward to many more in the future.

☀️ Hello, Monday...Hello Monday Member Spotlight!

👋 Meet Tom Ryan!
Tom is pictured with his youngest granddaughter, Sofia, at the IAAC's Christmas Party for children in . Fast forward to today, Sofia will be a senior next year!

2️⃣0️⃣ Years in IAAC: Tom has been a member for 20 years and was the club's first Token Irishman. He says the club has become more diverse over the years, with many members from non-Italian American backgrounds!

👍 Why Tom likes IAAC: "The members are just a great group of people that I’m proud to say have become very close friends. I’ve enjoyed being involved in the club’s activities, like the pitch and bocce leagues, construction projects, and serving on the Executive Board. In recent years, we’ve had some amazing guest speakers, like Dino Babbers, Jason Smorel, Doug Logan, Donna Ditota, and in a few weeks, Fran Brown is coming to the hall. That’s going to be exciting!"

🎉 Tom says another benefit of being a member is the ability to rent the hall for a private event at great rates. You can have up to 100 guests celebrate with you!
