This past weekend, Art on the Ave celebrated its 24th year! This festival highlights local art, artists, music, food, and entertainment on 6th Avenue from Alder Street to State Street in Tacoma.

This event was one of 39 organizations in our 2024 Special Events Funding program cycle, reflecting Tacoma's diverse communities and cultures.

➡ City of Destiny Awards Ceremony - 6:00pm

➡ Parking is FREE - We suggest guests park in Lot A or Lot J. ADA Parking, which is closest to the doors of the Exhibition Hall, is Lot K – this lot is on East 27th Street, and all parking in this lot is ADA. The front door from this lot is fully accessible.

➡ Guest seating is open seating. ADA / wheelchair locations will be marked at the ends of the front four rows in each section.

Julie is a life and small business coach who also founded Caribbean Queens, a group that hosts pop-up events and had their first, very successful festival earlier this year. In addition to coaching and mentoring female small business owners she gives much of her time mentoring students at her alma mater, The University of Puget Sound, and advocating for local, woman-owned, BIPOC businesses.

Selayna Rudolph is a Silas High School student who is deeply passionate about community. She works on issues around the unhoused in Tacoma and believes in building people up. She also enjoys supporting children through efforts such as Trunk or Treat, which through the ABS, she brought the community together. Selayna is committed to organizing more events like this in hopes that it will foster more unity in an often-divided population.

Albert, a retiree and U.S. Army veteran, has served as the volunteer park steward for Oak Tree Park for the past 15 years. He has contributed over 300 hours of service in the past 3 years alone, and in addition to his dedicated care of Oak Tree Park, Albert also volunteers with work groups at other park sites.

The City's Events & Recognitions Committee is pleased to present the 2024 City of Destiny Award in the Group & Teamwork category to The Empowerment Center. Founded by Lawanna and Dr. Jimmie Lee, The Empowerment Center is a 100% volunteer organization that provides food and employment support to thousands of families every year. Through their efforts, and the efforts of over 1,000 volunteers, they have been instrumental in putting food on family’s tables and putting people to work, diverting them from homelessness, and restoring individuals to self-sufficiency.
