Our Story

The year was 1982 and a sizzling homeowners board meeting was in progress. Marie Sluchak had just become a member of the TCPOA, moving here permanently from the Peninsula. Having purchased Tahoma property in 1960, she had become aware of the needs of the community. A man challenged her: “If you think the children in Tahoma need a park, why don’t you put action where your mouth is?” That launched the first glimmer of Tahoe Cedars Park and put fire in Marie’s eyes.

Marie went to the County Recorder and found on our deed plot maps that indeed the sub-dividers had forethought and recreation in mind. A pie shaped acre of land between Pine and Wilson Streets had been reserved as PUBLIC PARK. In that year the ground laid idle. There were auto tires, food garbage and fallen dead trees so thick there could be no trespassing. Marie sent out a call for volunteers. A sign went up “STOP AND HELP” Saturday, September 8th. Twenty people came for a heavy days work that first Saturday. On and off all summer, when time permitted, this group had a park as its goal. Work, clean-up, work, work!

By spring of 1985, Bob Schultz came in with his crew and built a stage. Daffoldils were blooming on the park point. Angela Haag was remodeling her Pizzeria and donated five big picnic tables and benches to the developing park. The community was indeed on a roll. Marie, as supervisor, was busy organizing the programs for the summer. Speakers on educational topics guested every Wednesday and Saturday nights from 7:00 to 9:30 pm.
