We are happy to announce Noles Onstage: Play Word of South - a new competition allowing one College of Music group (of any genre) the opportunity to play a 45-minute slot at the Word of South Festival during its run from April 26th to 28th. The performance pays $500 and the winning group will be displayed on the festival’s official website!
To enter, please submit your group name, 2 video submissions of recent performances or rehearsals, a group bio, and a professional group photo via a PDF with a link to the videos to [email protected] by 11.59pm on January 26th!
All performers in the group must be College of Music students to enter.

Allison Cort (MA, 2024) recently won a $4000 Jim Moran Micro Grant from the FSU College of Entrepreneurship for her business, Haiska Piano Tuning and Instrument Repair. Allison is a student of Dr. Li Yeoh (Piano Technology), and her grant proposal was supervised by Dr. Noël Wan (Harp/Entrepreneurship). Congratulations!!

Survey of Traditional Music in Florida (3 credits)
This course will examine the musical traditions of Florida’s various folk and cultural groups. Students will learn about regional communities of practice, ethnic enclaves, and cultural performances across the state of Florida, informed by 40+ years of ethnographic research by the Florida Folklife Program. This class will also train students to design and conduct their own ethnographic study on traditional musical genres or artists in Florida.
Samuel Ovalle (B. M. Violin Performance, 2027) was granted a fellowship to attend the SphinxConnect 2024: Amplify, the largest and longest-standing convening body dedicated to diversity and inclusion in classical music. During this four-day residency, Samuel will be able to network with other musicians and will participate in workshops concerning the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classical music industry. Through the fellowship, he will also get the chance to attend the prestigious Sphinx Competition.

Dr. Mary Matthews, Assistant Professor of Flute, recently released her second flute methods book, "Into the Beyond," co-authored with flutist-composer Nicole Chamberlain. Published by Spotted Rocket, the book, part of the Beatboxing and Beyond series, caters to flutists seeking to enhance their extended techniques and is available for purchase in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

This week, Indigenous Heritage Month was celebrated at the Florida Governor’s Mansion where our were invited to perform to welcome the guests! The winners of this year’s student and educators contests were recognized by Governor Ron DeSantis and were invited to the awards ceremony here in Tallahassee. We are so proud of our students for representing the College of Music and Florida State University during their performance for the Seminole Tribe and State of Florida.
