Good news to share this morning! The bill to increase Florida's annual SUN Trail spending for new trails to $50 million per year has been approved by the Florida House. It already was passed by the Senate, so now it goes to the Governor for signing into law. The bill also makes a one-time appropriation of $200 million to accelerate trail construction and makes trails in the Florida Wildlife Corridor a priority for the SUN Trail program and the state’s greenways and trails network. The Florida Bicycle Association has strongly supported the bill while also encouraging that new connections to--and within--population centers be created so that more people can access the trails and safely use “active” modes of transportation.

Hello Massers. This is Jeff, the guy who lead CMT for several years.

Talking with our ride leaders this morning I'm told they decided to stop the ride midway due to several young rider's excessively unsafe riding habits. I wasn't there, so I don't have specifics.

Bottom line, we CANNOT lead rides where people are playing chicken with traffic (THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN!), UNSAFELY popping wheelies in front of or into the group putting others at high risk (THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN!).
There are multiple reasons you MUST STAY BEHIND THE LEADER. We've covered this too many times.

I will remind you that we've had leaders, who lead for years, simply ride off and quit mid ride due to less crap than I've listed here today. This morning some of your current leaders are talking about quitting.
⛔️⛔️IF THIS BEHAVIOR DOESN'T END..NOW..THE LEADERS WILL QUIT, THERE WILL BE NO RIDES.⛔️⛔️

🚫🚫 It is SOLELY the leader's call when to where to CORK AN INTERSECTION.🚫🚫

THIS LAST THING WE WANT TO DO IS MAKE A BUNCH OF RULES, MORE SO, ENFORCE A BUNCH OF RULES, but we CANNOT, WILL NOT RIDE UNDER CONDITIONS SOME OF YOU BROUGHT LAST NIGHT.

If those of you who think it's cool to play chicken in oncoming traffic, and try to crash into other riders, we invite you to create your own ride. (THIS CRAP WILL NOT HAPPEN on CMT rides!) This is the crap that lead Miami CM to have popo escorts forced upon them.

Wheelies are fine & yes, FUN, so long as you're not putting riders, traffic, pedestrians, puppies, ect at risk. We've actually lead wheelie themed rides not so long ago that rolled without issue.

PLEASE behave so we aren't FORCED to END CMT.

To those of you who have ridden safely with us for decades, we value you, and hope you'll help us win over these young riders, and help us excise those who refuse to ride remotely safely.

As I told the Spokes Council as we prepared this statement, we've never had to make such a HEAVY POST. I don't appreciate a few people ruining a ride we put so much work into, forcing us to make such statements.

It would seem as though the bike lane on the northbound side of Bayshore should become a protected bike lane. Currently, most bikers on Bayshore tend to ride on the sidewalk, weaving in between pedestrians, despite a bike lane being clearly marked on the street.

We have a feeling bikers would use the sidewalk less and use the bike lane more if the bike lanes seemed safe. We don’t blame bikers for not wanting to use the existing bike lane and put their life in the hands of drivers on Bayshore.

Bayshore northbound is ideal for a protected bike lane, as no roads intersect the bike lane for the length of Bayshore. This bike lane could be protected for the length of Bayshore without interruption creating a nice cycle track and getting the bikers off the sidewalk so pedestrians could enjoy their Bayshore stroll without bikes weaving in between them.

The bike lane protection would also act as a traffic calming feature for the northbound Bayshore lanes by narrowing the road. This would be useful and increase safety considering Bayshore is notorious for speeding which has led to deaths.
