Funerals are expensive. Period. Even though a small town like ours is far less than the major metropolitan areas, the expenses - when compared to the average wages - are up there. For instance, a basic cremation runs nearly $3500.

The economy has forced serious increases in all funeral industry operating expenses, which means that we all have to increase everything.

I say this to make this following point… get yourself a prearranged funeral. Talk to any local funeral service provider and get something going. Most funeral homes lock in the rates for those expenses they can control, like the funeral ceremony, transfer fees, use of the hearse, etc.

Say you wanted a direct cremation two years ago. It would have only been $2400 estimated. That same service is now nearly $3500 estimated. Had you purchased an arrangement two years ago, a major portion of that cost would be guaranteed today and will be as long as that funeral home exists. There are already savings to be seen. Even more so as time passes.

Don’t be afraid to talk about it, it’s an important matter.
