Reflecting and listening to the late Kris Kristofferson.

Many years ago when we were just getting started with concerts in the Temecula Valley, we had the distinct honor / privilege of doing a show with Kris Kristofferson at La Cereza Winery with Kris.

By that time, I had already been doing concerts and booking tours for a while so the "Starstruck Effect" had kinda worn off but with Kris, it all came back! This man was a true legend and really nice guy.

I remember him telling us before the show to make sure the lights were “bright and white and in my face, I don’t want to see past the first row.”

Who knew but apparently Mr. Kristofferson had stage fright even into his 70’s! This was the man who wrote classics such as: Me and Bobby McGee • Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down • Help Me Make It Through The Night • Highwayman and (my personal favorite) Beat The Devil.

And here he was, by himself. Just his voice and his guitar.

After the show, he came up to our soundtech, the masterful Craig Randall and as I was standing right there to witness it with my own eyes and ears he says to Kris; “I have never tipped a sound tech in my life and then he handed Craig $100.”

I still have the board recording of that show on a CD somewhere. I should go back and listen to that show again.

For songwriting, his lyrics, melody and mood go straight to the soul. Heartbreaking and inspiring. I think of him and all the artists he influenced and how many of those artists have influenced me.

Although I’m only standing on the shoulders of these giants (or rather hanging upside-down by a thread), I still have that same goal when I write songs.
