New compressor at Uranus!- it's a dbx 160XT, upgraded and "revived" by Revive Audio. It'll make a nice addition to our racks. We already have (and use constantly) a "newer" dbx 160A, so this will be a slightly-different (better?) version of the same great thang! Come check it out ;)

Fuzzywallz Mastering

I just started using/demo-ing the new version of Ozone (ozone 6) and I LOVE what they have done so far...The layout alone is worth the price, but the new options and the limiter's features seal the deal. I can honestly say my masters just got better and louder (if needed ;). The transient preservation mode on the limiter- f'n GENIUS! Thanks iZotope, this $99 will be well spent with you! Merry Xmas me...

Today Jon Weil is at the Laguna Suite, mastering the audio for Ryan Tree's upcoming release "Illusions".....For the gear geeks- We skipped the hardware compressor this time, and relied on digital compression instead; we definitely still implemented the hardware EQ. The analog comp just didn't add anything useful. Mastering this EP has definitely been a case of just making the songs/mixes sound cohesive and giving it that "polish"- no surgery needed;). Rather than leaning heavily on any one piece of gear or processing, were using many items, but only a tiny bit if each. Here's a sampling of what we DID use: Elysia Xfilter EQ (hardware), UA converters & Fairchild 670 plugin, Waves L1 & LinMB, Fabfilter ProQ2 and UA's SPL Vitalizer (only on one track), plus just a few more top secret ingredients...Having just downloaded the brand-new UAD Manley Vari-Mu compressor, we gave it a try on "Illusions" but it ultimately wasn't used. We have been very busy doing the final mixes for a few of our long-termers: RAC, Ryan Tree, and Victims of the Crush. Jon is in audio heaven- mixing may very well be his favorite part.

Business is back up! We are getting nice and booked again. Yesterday we welcomed back "Marz" (original hip-hop/rap artist) and will be working with many more new and regular clients throughout the month. It feels good to be makin records again!!! Also, barely any issues with pro tools 11 and the hardware upgrade. In fact, we've gotten VERY used to some of the new features and quality boosts provided by the new stuff ;)

Pro Tools 11 coming soon to a Uranus near you! We're upgrading to whole system and ditching the HD. With how fast native processing has gotten we feel that the new HD-X systems are just big Avid "dongles". Our input count will rise to 32 and outputs to 32 also (all simultaneous). Selling our retro 176 to make this happen....no pain no gain!

We went "mobile" to record THE FRAY at Saguaro Hotel in Scottsdale, AZ for hot1039's "Live and Rare" series. They played wonderfully and the mixes/masters were JUST finished by Jon Weil- sounding killer! We'll post links to the final videos ASAP....

Fuzzywallz Mastering

Speaking of which (see below), did you know that this album (Whitesnake (self-titled)) and Michael Jackson's "Bad" were recorded to digital? Yes, my audio-geek friends- both of these analog copies mention (in the album liner notes....remember those?) a very specific "thank you" to the Mitsubishi Group. That means they were tracking to (and possibly mixing) to 16,24, and/or 32 track, 16 bit, DIGITAL.............Tape. Yup....That also explains some things ;)

I just busted out my copy of WHITESNAKE (self-titled) on cassette tape and as i reach the 3rd song, "Still of the Night", my life and basic thought process suddenly makes clear sense. This was the stuff i listened to, and cut my teeth at at the tender age of 8 or so...It's so cheesy, but i dare u to listen...I'm captivated and somewhat ecstatic ;)
