One thing we here at The Backyard Grill try to impress on everyone, whether you are new and just learning to cook, or you’ve been cooking for 30 years and have lots of experience:
Cooking is your own. Do not listen to others that put rules on cooking...
1) Chili can’t have beans - FALSE!
Chili can have whatever you want
We make a Mango/Habanero chili that is very delicious.
2) if you’re from the South you have to use Duke’s mayonnaise - FALSE
I hate Duke’s mayonnaise. I think it’s watery and thin. My actual favorite Mayo is Hellman’s and my favorite Mayo type spread is Miracle Whip.
3) If you’re from the South you must like mustard on your burger instead of Mayo - FALSE
Me, I’m a Mayo person all around. Do I like mustard? Yes. I have 6 different kinds of mustard in my fridge right now. But, for sandwiches, my go to is Mayo.
Rules limit creativity. Sure, there are basic rules for specific types recipes, e.g. Hollandaise Sauce, Cream Gravy, Chili, etc.
But do not let other people stifle your creativity.
You choose how you create within the bounds of infinite food, seasonings, spices and recipes and do not ever let someone tell you that one way is the only way.
