The Significance of the First Footer
The first footer should traditionally be a dark-haired male, believed to bring good luck for the year ahead. This stems from the Viking days when a fair-haired stranger arriving at one’s door often signified trouble. The dark-haired first footer, ideally tall and dark, is seen as a protector against any ill fate that might be lurking...
A first footer must not arrive at a house empty-handed. It is considered bad luck for both the household and the first footer if they do not bring symbolic gifts like coal, bread, salt, silver, or whisky. These items are meant to ensure the household’s warmth, food supply, wealth, and good cheer for the coming year.

The results of our study “Women in Piping and Drumming: Equality, Inclusivity, and Diversity” around the representation and inclusion of women in Scotland’s piping and drumming scene, have been published today. This survey was first launched in April 2023 and aimed to understand women's perspectives and experiences, to establish a baseline on what was currently happening in the community and gain insight into potential barriers for women taking part in piping and drumming in Scotland. You can read the full findings from our website at the link below.

The National Piping Centre has launched two new initiatives which aim to promote more equality, diversity and inclusion and take meaningful steps to help create a safer and more inclusive piping and drumming community for all. These two projects, The Maket Collective and The Stand Project, each seek to place equality for women firmly on the agenda across the piping world in Scotland and beyond.

The Maket Collective project launched in August this year, with the second new initiative launching today - The Stand Project. This allyship project aims to reach into community spaces to provide support and create dialogue around diversity in the piping and drumming community.

To join this project you can pledge to stand with all members of the piping and drumming community, stand up for everyone in the community, and stand against discrimination. To demonstrate this, you can wear a pin badge which will show their support for everyone having a place in the piping community. The Stand Project pin badges are free and available from The National Piping Centre.

FB asks what is on our mind? More like who are we grateful for?

Let's start with the folks we honored at our 50th this year. We gave out Jean Keith Awards honoring the contributions of four people who have been making the games run smoothly for more than half of the games.

Let's start with Frank McConnell. Our records are not 100% complete, but Frank joined VSG in 1999 or 2000 with the Civil Air Patrol. He managed to coordinate a bunch of teenagers (including his daughters) in the parking area and ensure that they did an outstanding job getting folks parked and into the festival. He has stuck with us since then and became President for the 2011 games and presiding over it through our 50th games this year.

Along the way, Frank's whole family has gotten involved, currently with his wife, Marge, running the Hospitality Tent, supported by daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Joey. Daughter Beth has worn different hats on staff and the board of directors, currently setttling on advertistement and publicity while loaning her two older children out as auxiliary support to the President and Hospitality Tent. When not wrangling their children, SIL Nick has also joined in the weekend of thegames to lend a hand. Finally, daughter Allie was also involved in the games with CAP/parking until her passing. She is memorialized and continues to be part of the games with the Open Masters Athletics Classic - Allie McConnell Memorial Award.

We couldn't do this without Frank, Marge, and their wonderful family. Thank you for all that you do!
