Avelo Airlines is reducing service to several locations

Avelo’s Orlando Flight Not Returning to Dubuque in 2024

Avelo Airlines informed the Dubuque Regional Airport on July 1 that Dubuque will not be included in Avelo’s flight schedule for the fourth quarter of 2024.

Avelo had planned to resume direct flights from Dubuque to Orlando in November but said aircraft availability and increasing costs at Orlando International Airport factored into the decision.

Avelo announced similar decisions yesterday for five other Orlando “spoke” airports it served: Kalamazoo/Battle Creek (AZO), Greater Binghamton (BGM), Brownsville/South Padre (BRO), Central Wisconsin (CWA), and Central Region/Lansing (LAN).

Dubuque Regional Airport Manager Todd Dalsing was disappointed with Avelo’s decision, noting the popularity of the Orlando flight last year as evidenced by 80-90% load factors during peak travel times.

“The Orlando flights Avelo offered were very popular, running very strong load factors during core travel periods,” said Dalsing. “Passengers reported positive flights and passenger experiences at the airport were well-received.”

Dalsing said conversations with Avelo regarding service in 2025 are ongoing as well as discussions with other airlines to explore new flights and destinations at the Dubuque Regional Airport.

We hear that people traveling to Orlando International Airport from The Villages have become increasingly nervous because of reports of "horrific" traffic on the Turnpike. We report good news and bad news: The bad news actually isn't all that terrible: Yes, construction on the widening project (see https://floridasturnpike.com/turnpike-widening-infrastructure-initiative/ ) does continue to make itself known, however the impact of the project on our riders has been minimal. They mostly try to close lanes late at night, so we aren't seeing the big delays that had us diverting off of the Turnpike to go around.

The better news is regarding the current construction on the Southbound turnpike, just past the entrance ramp from 470. While that traffic does back up quite a distance between that point and exit 301, the easy work-around is to enter the Turnpike from 470. If our friends "between the 6's" and north are planning to drive to Orlando, we recommend entering from 470 while this road repair continues.

*This is not a part of the widening project*—it's just a road repair from a sinkhole that had occurred not long ago. Entering at 470 is pretty slow, so it might cause an additional 10 minutes or so on the drive, but right past there it will open up.

Orlando International Airport (MCO) shared this Spring Break season's busiest days, and their suggestions on how to navigate the crowds. Yesterday, we saw flights get delayed by hours, then delayed again!
