How do you defeat a Champion ? How do you defeat multiple Champions?
How do you best people who play and practice more than you ?
This event in NY at Turningstone Casino had meaning for me for many of the above reasons. I was producing events worldwide and coaching other pros in between. My practice time was at an all-time low, basically zero. I lost my status as a tournament favorite to win. But. I was still a tough draw for any world class pro. They knew it, and I knew it. It was more about motivation for me than anything else. Competing was a distant third in my priorities as I was focused on producing world class events and the success of my students on the pro tour superceded my own desire to win.
But this particular event, I was motivated. Partially what set this off was the week before I was playing in my own produced tournament the Lucasi 10-Ball & 14.1 Open. I didn’t particularly want to win my own event, but intended to gear up for certain players. I didn’t realize how much I missed being the underdog until fans , media and players started counting me out in recent times. What sparked me first was Dennis Orcollo. He was rising and hot beating everyone in the Philippines for the cash. Everyone thought he would walk over me. So I geared up enough juice to beat him 10-5. I can’t recall the other good players I beat but my attitude was “well I beat one of the best in the world so I might as well keep going. “ Everyone else seemed easy till I got to Shane Van Boening for the hot seat who had been #1 and already won the US Open plus beaten numerous pros for the cash. He had beaten me the two times we played so far , and he had this swagger about him that said I’m going to beat you again. So I was very motivated to show this youngster I could still chop it up! We went back and forth and he got to the hill 9-8 first. But I didn’t come that far to give up and got to 9-9. I then broke and ran out the final game and breathed a sigh of relief that I could still beat the up and coming Champions. I was preparing myself for a re-match with SVB but Johnny Archer stopped Shane who mag have been a little traumatized by Dragon’s upset. It was a single race finals with JA the favorite. But I was on fire at this point and in the zone. I was making everything in sight and I wanted JA to know early that I wasn’t going to lay down in the finals. Johnny was still in his prime so he seemed to have his way with everyone in the finals. I ended up beating him and winning the entire event undefeated. With zero practice time. Just mindset and a set of decades old skills drilled into my body.
A week later we are in NY. I drew SVB early. Knowing full well he was out for revenge. And also me knowing statistically it’s against a top pro being beaten twice by the same pro. Which made me reinforce even more mentally. I played SVB even HARDER than 5 days earlier. And he felt it. I won 9-5. Same feeling as the week before , I said to myself well you beat the best guy in the world might as well keep on going. I defeated Stevie Moore , my Mosconi Cup teammate Jeremy Jones , Raj Hundal for an undefeated run to the finals. Unfortunately Johnny was ready for the rematch and played near flawless to win the tournament. But I was very pleased of my 2 week performance and further cemented to my opponents that even a busy Charlie Williams promoter was a force to be reckoned with. And more importantly to myself, that mind over matter and willpower can outperform anything if you’re motivated.
Looking forward to teaching more on this to my students. Text 407-782-4978 to join my next Dragon Pro Pool Schools.
