A title is on the line in the cage grappling main event between 145 lbs. purple belts Shelly Mata (Renzo Gracie Pearland) takes on Cailin Fultz of Revolution Dojo.
We recently caught up with Shelly Mata to get to know her a little better prior to the matchup this Friday.
“I’m 36 years young and have been practicing Jiu Jitsu for 4 years this August,” she says. It’ll be an interesting contrast of demographics with her opponent Cailin being roughly half her age but also having about twice as much time training. For Shelly, she’s banking on the fact that her quality of training more than makes up for any difference.
“I have the most amazing training environment at Renzo Gracie Pearland. (‘m) surrounded by killers where new and/or OG’s take care of each other and push each other to greatness. I’m so grateful to Professor Joe and Lauren Murphy for taking me under their wing as they have along with Coach Ben and our GM Andrea. Cristina is my main training partner but I love to train with everyone. Different training partners is important and at all levels too.”
Shelly’s hope is that by training and competing, she can grow to her potential as a martial artist and let that lead her lifestyle.
“I’ve always been competitive so striving to be the best is always on my radar. The Gracie and Valente Families have also motivated me. What I’ve taken from both families is that Jiu Jitsu correlates to everything in life. That the philosophy behind Jiu Jitsu equals full on happiness and true meaning in life. I truly believe it because of the way it has affected my life. Truly grateful to them and Jiu Jitsu or everything it’s done for me.’
‘I’m excited for this opportunity at a title match and since it’s in a cage I plan on taking full advantage of it.
I’d love to thank my team at Renzo Gracie Pearland, my mom, Chris and Jose for believing in me and giving me this stage/cage to show off all my hard work. Wish my mom could be here to see
ELEVATE SUBMISSION SERIES 9 INTERVIEW - CAILIN FULTZ (REVOLUTION DOJO HEIGHTS)
How old are you and how long have you been training?
I’m 18 and I have been training for 10 years.
Who would you say are some of your greatest grappling influences and what did you take from them?
I would say my greatest influence is my coach @dink0. I have taken so much from him, but the biggest thing is to trust in myself and my technique.
How would you describe your training environment and who are some of your main training partners?
I would describe my training environment as fun, but there are also no easy rounds. We work hard but also make sure we are enjoying ourselves. One of my main training partners right now is my student Farrah. She pushes me to be better so she can also be better. She is so hard working it pushes and motivates me to work even harder.
Speaking of motivation, what motivates you to compete?
Pushing myself to be the next best version of myself pushes me to compete. As well as the kids I teach. They push me to be better not only for me but for them.
Any thoughts on this match coming up at Elevate Submission Series against Shelly Mata?
I think this match is going to be an exciting high paced match. Definitely going to be a fun one to watch!!!
Anybody you want to thank or invite out to watch you compete?
I want to thank my coaches Dinko Bektic and Jeff Messina, the kids I teach at Revolution Dojo Heights, and all my training partners. I couldn’t do this without all of them.
