Good morning Flower Friends!!!
Big things in the works! We’ve applied to be part of the Prairie Moon Nursery seed program, which will mean that you can pick up native flower seeds from us for the same cost as ordering online from one of my absolute favorite nurseries, minus shipping! They also have native plants if you don’t feel like starting from seed, but you will need to order those directly from Prairie Moon.
I’m curating a list of flowers that are not only native to Indiana but also native to our county! We will have their seed packets available at our on-farm Spring Sale with the immense selection of Dahlia tubers!
Natives are so critical to our ecosystems, and there are many wonderful pollinators (many at risk and endangered) that depend on very specific plants to lay their eggs and feed the larvae so they can turn into beautiful butterflies and moths, beetles and so much more! Not to mention the food sources for our bees and hummingbird families! You also have lower maintenance gardens, since native plants are plants that THRIVE in your climate, soil type and environment.
Zane and I are each working on separate butterfly garden areas this spring, and it’s been really fun to learn all about our native plants and which beneficial insects they host! And of course we turned it into a competition so you’ll have to come out at different times and see which one is your favorite! 😉 I won’t label them so it’s fair, but honestly I think I have my work cut out for me if I want to win!
Amongst many things, I’m planting a few new Milkweeds (gotta try to save the Monarchs!) and Lupinus Perennis which is the host of the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly! Are there any native flowers that you’re looking to plant this year???
