Good morning Flower Friends!!!

Big things in the works! We’ve applied to be part of the Prairie Moon Nursery seed program, which will mean that you can pick up native flower seeds from us for the same cost as ordering online from one of my absolute favorite nurseries, minus shipping! They also have native plants if you don’t feel like starting from seed, but you will need to order those directly from Prairie Moon.

I’m curating a list of flowers that are not only native to Indiana but also native to our county! We will have their seed packets available at our on-farm Spring Sale with the immense selection of Dahlia tubers!

Natives are so critical to our ecosystems, and there are many wonderful pollinators (many at risk and endangered) that depend on very specific plants to lay their eggs and feed the larvae so they can turn into beautiful butterflies and moths, beetles and so much more! Not to mention the food sources for our bees and hummingbird families! You also have lower maintenance gardens, since native plants are plants that THRIVE in your climate, soil type and environment.
Zane and I are each working on separate butterfly garden areas this spring, and it’s been really fun to learn all about our native plants and which beneficial insects they host! And of course we turned it into a competition so you’ll have to come out at different times and see which one is your favorite! 😉 I won’t label them so it’s fair, but honestly I think I have my work cut out for me if I want to win!

Amongst many things, I’m planting a few new Milkweeds (gotta try to save the Monarchs!) and Lupinus Perennis which is the host of the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly! Are there any native flowers that you’re looking to plant this year???

The first seedlings of 2025 have emerged! This is our first succession of Stock- which may be one of my favorite scents out in the field or the high tunnel! They smell almost peppery and SO sweet! Absolutely divine!

Now the floodgates are open- this week I will be seeding some of the slowest growing crops that we rely on- Lisianthus and Eucalyptus. Then Sweet Peas. Then we will start the many, many trays of seedlings that will be going in a brand new area of the field this year since the Dahlias are taking over the production field. It is a steady stream of planning, timing, filling trays or soil blocking, seeding, watching and watering, hardening off, planting out and starting more. We will have thousands of little seedlings in my grow room. And let me just say, seeing the tiny little dots of green pop through the dirt makes my heart SO HAPPY! 🩷 What are you growing this year that you’re excited about?

Hi Flower Friends!!!
I hope you're all having a wonderful January so far. There's a lot going on behind the scenes right now, with the Dahlia Tuber Sale and starting seeds for some of the pretties that will be going into the field in the next couple of months. I have so much to share with you but I don't expect you to read a novel. LOL. If you'd like to read my meanderings, I'd love for you to join the email list, I'm going to be sending out a farm update for 2025 soon.

Now to the point of my post... We are currently working on scheduling dates for Sunset Sip and Snips with Tipsy Trailer of Indy for the 2025 growing season! There are going to be a few changes in the coming season, most notably, we won't be having many all-ages U-Pick dates. I just don't have many weekends available due to my wedding work. I am considering opening a weekday evening for U-Pick, maybe a Thursday? Does anyone have any input? I heard from quite a few of you that Saturdays didn't really work for you once school started back up because of kids in sports.

So many of you have made our little flower farm part of your lives and we miss seeing all of you here in the off-season! I hope you're all doing well! We are dreaming of sunny days and sharing our beautiful bounty with you again soon! 🩷💐

Dahlia Obsession Level 12: Growing Dahlias from seed.

When you plant a tuber or rooted cutting, you get a specific variety that is genetically the same as the mother plant. Seeds from that same plant will give you a completely unique new plant!

This was one of my many 2024 seedlings, and probably my favorite one in terms of coloring. At least half of them were highlighter yellow so it wasn’t much of a competition. 😂

Ultimately I decided not to keep it- it was an open center and the stems were not sturdy enough.

Let’s see what FUN 2025 brings!

Snow day projects! I made my first round of bottle stoppers for my brother’s bar! He picked out his flowers and greenery from my dried flowers stash from our 2024 season and these are some of my favorites of the bunch!

I have been dying to share this and now that Christmas is over I can without ruining the surprise!

In the spirit of our annual Dahlia Tuber Sale kicking off today, I had to showcase the extent of my obsession with these beautiful flowers. 😉 Not only did I make about 75 ornaments with them this year, I made a couple of pieces of jewelry! This necklace was a Christmas gift for one of our favorite family members who loves flowers and whose favorite color is purple. 🩷

It was a small pompon type, so the perfect size for a pendant, and I LOVE IT.

What do you think? Do you love it or do you LOVE it?!?!? 😂

Have you met "Omega" yet?

She has petals that are "laciniated" and create an almost fluffy look. Extra huggable looking, in my opinion! 😂

She's a late addition to the sale, mainly because I was feeling selfish and wanted to plant all of them, but I figured I should do the right thing and share. 🙄 😂

Thank you for an absolutely AMAZING 2024!!!

It was a year of many firsts- U-Picks. Sunset Sip and Snip Events. Flower Stand Fridays. Full Service Weddings. Wreath Workshops. Farmer’s Markets. Preserving Flowers.

I have had an absolute blast this year and I can’t thank you enough!

We learned some lessons- including some hard ones, like how I killed 1000 Lisianthus plugs that I started from seed. 😔 Bug issues, diseases, drought, hail, massive storms, and on the human side, I’m evidently allergic to Zinnias now. 🫣 Over-exposure, maybe? 🤷‍♀️

But it’s also been SO FULL of the best things ever! Every single one of our couples this year was awesome and I’m very pleased to call some of you friends now. I got to design and execute some really cool events. We sold out on Valentine’s, Mother’s Day, many Flower Stand Fridays, and almost every Sunset Sip and Snip! It has been a hell of a year here at Broken Maple Farm and we have YOU to thank!

So thank you, for the love and support, and for allowing me to unabashedly share my flower obsession with you! Here’s to an EVEN MORE Flowery 2025!!!

We drove home from a party tonight and took the long way to see some light displays. The kids loved looking at everyone’s lights and it motivated me to finally change the batteries in the light strands of my Holiday Arch. And of course now I just want to stare at my own door forever. 🤣 And obviously I’m biased, but coming around the bend to see our fence lit up in the distance brings real joy to my heart.

I didn’t spend many holiday seasons here in the US as a kid, and every time I did I always wanted to look at all of the lights and vowed I’d be one of those people who decorated every year as a grown up. And so I have! Started with just a couple of strands of lights wrapped around a sad shrub and went from there! When we lived in the condo, my next door neighbor who shared a roofline with us let me decorate his side too when I wanted to light up more than just my little walkway. Now we’ve got a little more and NO HOA so the last few years have been really fun! 😉 Lit up over 500’ of fence this year and it’s always my intent to expand even further with each year! Have you happened to take a detour past the farm this holiday season to see this year’s display?

I regret to inform you that Callie girl has been fired from the #1 employee role that she has held since July. This occurrence is due to the entire family of Voles we discovered in the high tunnel. When informed of her shortcomings, she had nothing but chirps and purring to say, and only rolled around in the dirt as if to say she does not care. We are accepting votes for the new ✨employee of the month!✨

You guys!!! Check out this gorgeous, sustainable bag from that was made with SUNFLOWERS! Ahhh I love it so much!!! I already have some tea towels made by Rachel (and the precious little hands that like to help) and they’re my favorites. Using flowers and other plant material to naturally dye and eco-print the fabric just makes this gift even nearer and dearer to my heart. Thank you!!! 🩷🩷🩷
