What’s on your windowsill? I keep a little vase going all summer long on this ledge behind the kitchen sink. I pull out what has faded, clip the stems of what’s still holding up and add to it.

The blue delphinium was cut 5 days ago. I was going to use it in a demonstration bouquet at the Botanic garden but it looked a little floppy at the top. I brought it home, recut the stem, turned it upside down and filled the stem with water, plugged the end with a bit of tissue and stuck it in the vase. It worked!

It’s still peony heaven at Old Mission Flowers but they’ll go fast now that it’s seriously warming up. There are some pre-cut in the cooler but they’ll go fast.

I’m going to be demonstrating some bouquet making techniques at the Botanic Garden. If you’re going to Recess (5-7) stop and say hi.

In preparation, I’m picking now, putting the flowers in clean buckets with “flower food” and keeping them in a cool dark area of my house so they can hydrate before I arrange them.

Peony season begins and so much more…. The lilacs (syringa) in front of the house by Center Rd are perfect to pick - about 1/2 in bloom. Lupines are also best picked when there is a cluster of buds left to open. There are going to be a lot of peonies this year. Pick them when the ball has softened up a bit and showing color.

Happy Holidays!

We bought a potted Balsam Fir to use as a Christmas tree this year so we won't bring it inside until last minute. I was missing that smell of evergreens so clipped a few branches from things growing in our yard... The container is a small rectangle that is a little more than an inch wide and works well for holding the branches upright and doesn't take up a lot of space on the counter.

When I worked in a flower shop at Christmas, we used to make a base of short evergreen clippings and then added a few carnations, mums or roses for an elegant holiday arrangement.

Wow! The Old Mission Women’s Club made and filled all these stockings that are being delivered today to The Women’s Resource Center and Addiction Treatment Services. We do good work, we also buy snow gear for needy kids who live out here, donate Thanksgiving baskets (boxes) and make grants to local nonprofits. Support our work, buy our cookies - Saturday morning at the township hall. Come early, the sale officially starts at 8 am, expect a line.

I had to go outdoors today and soak up some vitamin D. I’m not very crafty but making a holiday porch pot doesn’t take too much artistic ability. I wanted to add a little glitz so spray painted a couple stems of milkweed pods and some hydrangeas.

I closed the garden mid-September because we had wanderlust. We’ve been away since the end of September and came home from the blue skies of Utah to pretty dreary Michigan weather, although the drive down from the UP was colorful. I’m hoping it improves because I have a lot of clean up to do, bulbs to plant and peonies ordered for fall delivery. Like athletes, gardens are made in the off-season!

To my surprise upon my return, the dahlias look better than when I left.

This is an orienpet lily bloom that is bigger than my hand. I found it on the ground when I was tidying up the garden. I picked the anthers (pollen) off to make it less fragrant and put the stem in a small dish of water.

Fall at Old Mission Flowers

If you are looking for something to do, come pick a bouquet.

I generally go to garage sales and resale shops to find vases but I haven't been because of Covid-19. If you want to recycle some just drop them off at the garden shed and take a flower credit: $1.00 per quart jar, like-sized vases and larger vases, 50 cents for vases smaller than a quart jar. Thank you!

Finally, my dahlias are starting to bloom. I pinched them to get longer stems and as a result they are later than ever. I find them difficult to grow. This year I lost many because I planted right before we had a lot of rain and the tubers rotted. The tubers have to be dug and stored in northern Michigan, they need 60* soil temperature to grow, there are frequently moisture and heat issues - too much or too little, they need a lot of fertilizing but it's tricky, there are some insects that adore them and they are late bloomers. It seems like every year I decide not to grow them and then they start blooming...

Zinnias are native to our southwestern states, Mexico and Central America. They really take off in the heat of the summer but keep blooming in our cooler fall. If you love hot colors, add zinnias to your bouquets.
