Florida's FIRST: Florida's Forensic Institute for Research, Security, and Tactics

This was an amazing field trip for GASA Forensic Science class! It was 3-hour presentations covering K9, unmanned systems, forensic anthropology, labs, and more!
Who knew this huge Forensic department was right here? They have a huge K-9 facility for training and housing the dogs, FEMA-certified debris mounds for rescue training, sections for fire rescue training, a body farm for forensic anthropology training, unmanned systems (all sorts of drones and dog robots), classrooms, and so much more I can't remember! They are building a new Forensic lab too! This place is HUGE and awesome! It's one of only a few expansive training centers in the country and one of only three FEMA-certified training rescue mounds in the entire country! People come from all over the country to train officers and dogs here. Pretty exciting and proud to say we have all of this right here in our area!

Thank you so much to the Pasco County Sheriff’s for this amazing experience!

Today's field trip was to The Ringling - The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota. You would be shocked to hear that we hadn't been there before, since we seem to have done everything else in Florida! It was a beautiful place with so much to see. We have to go back to see the residence, Cà d'Zan, since it had hurricane damage and limited visitors. The video is less than 10 minutes of video and pictures. Very interesting place with lots of history, in Renaissance style.

Sedona bought 3 luna moth cocoons way back in November. It's been a roller coaster waiting for them to emerge. We canceled trips 3 times waiting! They have been in and out of the fridge for hibernation. One finally emerged a few weeks ago, Delta. (Two more will hopefully emerge someday! LOL) Her moth lived 10 days. She pinned it to dry over a week ago. Today she finished the mounting project. She found a beautiful frame, but needed a shadow box, so she did some DIY painting, sawing, sanding, and drilling and made the frame she wanted! It turned out AMAZING!

Sedona is reading about Ben Franklin today and we were talking about his invientions, one of which is the "glass harmonica". That brought us to try this with different glasses... I might be sorry I showed her this! LOL. - A chain of events occur when you move your finger across the rim of a glass and make sound. First thing you need to know is that material has a frequency at which it vibrates. This is called its resonant frequency. Your example of singing glasses is a good way to explain resonant frequency. If you run your wet finger around the rim of the glass too fast, the glass will not make any sound. And if you run your wet finger around the rim of the glass too slowly, the glass will not make a sound. In order for the glass to make noise you will have to move your wet finger around the rim of the glass at the same frequency (or speed) as the resonant frequency of the glass (or material). Carefully, try this at home with glasses to see how fast you need to move your finger around the glass in order to make noise. When you run your finger around the glass, this gives energy to the molecules in the glass making them vibrate. When individual molecules in the glass vibrate it makes the whole glass vibrate. This vibration then transfers to the sir molecules and that is what makes up the sound waves that you hear. When you change the amount of water in the glass you are adjusting the mass of the system (the water and the glass). The more mass you have in the glass the less the glass molecules vibrate, the less the molecules vibrate the less energy that is in the system, the less energy causes the air molecules to have a lower frequency in which you can tell from the pitch of the sound. http://scienceline.ucsb.edu/getkey.php?key=387
