Performing puppets for recorded media requires a unique variety of skills when working with a video monitor as the audience.

Lisa Sturz, Emmy award-winning Artistic Director of Red Herring Puppets, has decades of experience performing puppets on camera and training others to succeed. Her TV/film credits include Elmo in Grouchland, Muppets from Space,Howard the Duck, the Flintstones, Ninja Turtles 3, RoboCop2, Gremlins 2, Murphy Brown, PuzzlePlace, Batman Returns and several commercials and eCards.

Bring your own hand and rod (Muppet style) puppet or borrow one of several that will be provided.

Interested participants are invited to attend either or both sessions. In the second session we will continue with the skills in Session One and will add group improvisations and choreograph a musical number.

Meet Alebrijes cast member, Niccolo "Nico" Giambanco!

⭐ Niccolo "Nico" Giambanco ⭐

Niccolo "Nico" Giambanco is a Library Associate at the Murphy-Wilmot Library in Tucson, Arizona. At his library branch, Nico is responsible for weekly family storytimes, amongst many other responsibilities usually pertaining to youth services and programming. In his spare time, Nico is a writer, actor, and puppeteer. He is grateful to Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre for the opportunity to perform!

Meet Alebrijes cast member, Tyler Gastelum!

Tyler Gastelum is thrilled to be returning to Scoundrel and Scamp's stage, where has was last seen as the title character in Pooh, and collaborating for the first time with Borderlands Theater. Proud to be making art in his ancestral homeland, he is a graduate of the University of Arizona and Tucson's own Bennett Theatrelab. As a trained actor and vocalist, Tyler has been privileged to work with many local companies such as Live Theatre Workshop, Winding Road Theatre Ensemble, Something Something Theatre, SFCT, Arts Express, and Arizona Rose Theater. Some favorite past credits include Jon in tick, tick . . . BOOM!, Antonio Salieri in Amadeus, Padre in Man of la Mancha, and Shrek in Shrek the Musical.

Meet Alebrijes cast member, Alicia Damian!

⭐ Alicia Damian ⭐

Alicia Damian moved to Tucson, AZ in 2021 to pursue her BMUS in Music Education and BA in Theatre Arts at the University of Arizona. Born and raised in Yuma, AZ, she knew that teaching fine arts would be her lifelong passion. She is now working at Doolen Middle School as the OMA Performing Arts Integration Specialist. Being cast in Alebrijes has helped Alicia hone her acting skills while also planting her roots in the Tucson theatre community. Alicia is honored to be a part of this beautiful production.

Meet Alebrijes cast member, Anel Schmidt!

⭐ Anel Schmidt ⭐

Anel Schmidt is an accomplished award winning actress who has graced the stages of México and The United States for over four decades. Anel is excited and honored for the opportunity to be in her first show with Scoundrel and Scamp Theater. Anel is a native of México and a first generation graduate from the Theater Arts program at the Universidad de Sonora. In 2004, Anel moved to Tucson and continued her career at multiple theater companies including her first productions on a US stage with Borderlands Theater Bocón, Living Out, El Ausente, and No Roosters in Desert. Anel has performed in many bilingual productions with one of her favorites being Live Theater Workshops Día De Los Mu***os the Musical portraying the three headed character The Ancestors. Since 2009 she has been a full time cast member of Stories that Soar! and has performed in multiple musical productions at Arts Express including In the Heights (Camilla), Disney’s Descendants (Cruela De Ville), Rent (Dancer/Ensemble), Elf (Sara/Mathews), and Rock of Ages (Dancer/Ensemble). Anel is extremely excited and blessed to be representing an icon in the Mexican culture, La Muerte/La Catrina. Growing up in Mexico, Día de Los Mu***os was always a colorful celebration for Anel and her family. They would decorate their ofrendas and visit their loved ones at the Panteón and have a fiesta to remember and celebrate the lives of people they lost. Anel would like to thank her family and friends for the unwavering support in everything she does. And remember like La Muerte says: “You should never gamble with death!”

Meet Alebrijes cast member, Ivana Jimenez!

⭐ Ivana Jimenez ⭐

Ivana is overjoyed to be making her Scoundrel and Scamp debut as Alejandra. She’s been performing since age 11 and has been taking dancing, singing, and acting lessons over the past few years. She’s also been blessed to have participated in many theater competitions where she’s won various awards in different categories. Along with competitions, Ivana has had the privilege to be a part of so many different shows. Some of her favorite roles include Heather Duke in Heathers, Karen Smith in Mean Girls, Brooke Wyndham in Legally Blonde, The Queen of Hearts in Alice by Heart, and more! She's thrilled for all her friends and family to see the show and she would like to thank them for always supporting her. She hopes you all enjoy and feel the hard work that was put into this show!

Meet Alebrijes cast member, Ollin Acosta!

⭐ Ollin Acosta ⭐

Ollin Acosta is an actor from Tucson Arizona. He is a sophomore at the University of Arizona majoring in Theater Arts. Some of his most recent credits include, Pomegranate Seeds, Morbid, Russian Roulette, Barrio West Side Stories, Arsenic and Old Tucson, I Hate Shakespeare, The Election. He is also a member of the Charles Darwin Experience, the improvisation troupe at the University of Arizona, which has shows every Tuesday night at the Scoundrel and Scamp. He would like to thank his family and friends for all of the support they give, and also to the cast and crew of the production for working so hard and helping bring this show to life. ¡Si Se Puede!

Meet our director for Alebrijes, Marc David Pinate!

Marc David Pinate makes theatre in his ancestral home, the Sonoran Desert. Through the craft of theatrical storytelling his productions deepen feelings of belonging and social connection. Original works he’s developed and directed include Más, chronicling the banning of TUSD’s Mexican-American studies program; Sonoran Shadows, a shadow play based on the stories of Patricia Preciado-Martin; The Water Project, about the tumultuous history of water in Arizona performed on the riverbed of the dried-out Santa Cruz River. He created the Barrio Stories Project: a festival series grounded in oral histories and community collaboration using site-specific popular theatre and digital media to tell the story Tucson’s historic barrio heritage. He’s had the pleasure to work with Magic Theatre, Campo Santo, El Teatro Campesino, ShadowLight Productions, Steppenwolf, Cleveland Public, Milagro Theatre and the Kennedy Center for the Arts. His efforts have received support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Doris Duke Foundation, National New Play Network, The Mellon Foundation, and Theatre Communications Group. Marc is the producing artistic director of Borderlands Theater. He received an MFA in Stage Directing from The Theatre School at DePaul University.
