Celebrating 20 Years of the Zomi Community of Oklahoma (ZIOK)

On February 20, 2024, we marked a significant milestone - the 20th anniversary of the Zomi Community of Oklahoma (ZIOK). This day not only commemorates our establishment but also the remarkable journey we have embarked on together.

Three decades ago, the first Zomi, Rev. Dr. Chin Do Kham, arrived in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His pioneering spirit laid the foundation for what would become a thriving community. Today, we have grown from a handful of individuals to over 10,000 members, each contributing to the rich tapestry of our community and the great state of Oklahoma.

# # Acknowledgement

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed to the successful celebration of the Zomi National Day on February 20, 2024. This event was made possible by the generous financial contributions, the tireless efforts of those who made arrangements, and the talents and skills of many individuals.

We are grateful for the music, media, and songs provided by various businesses, organizations, and individuals. We also appreciate the support of sub-community organizations and churches. Your collective efforts have made this event a resounding success.

# # Remembering Our Pioneers

We honor Rev. Dr. Chin Do Kham, the first Zomi in Oklahoma, who was awarded the Zomi Community Pioneer Award by Zomi Community USA. His journey has inspired us all and paved the way for our community's growth and prosperity.

We also remember our former leaders who have passed on. Their love, guidance, sacrifices, and leadership have left an indelible mark on our community. They have inspired and influenced the new generation to strive for excellence and work hard in pursuit of the American dream.

# # A Thriving Community

Over the past 20 years, our community has thrived and bloomed. We have seen the local economy flourish, thanks in large part to the hard work and dedication of the Zomi individuals. We are proud of the positive impact our community has had on the wider society.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the current leaders of our community organization. Your commitment and dedication have been instrumental in our community's growth and success.

As we look back on our journey, we are filled with gratitude. We have been blessed as a community of believers, and we have successfully adjusted to our new community. Here's to the next 20 years of the Zomi Community of Oklahoma. May we continue to grow, thrive, and make a positive impact on the world around us.

My remarks from our 4:00 PM comprehensive storm response briefing on 6/20/23:

I want to start by correcting the rumor of the day. I’ve had a lot of people contact me with concern that we are about to run out of fuel in Tulsa. This is not true. As we discussed at yesterday’s briefing, fuel supply was a concern at this time yesterday if an emergency waiver wasn’t issued by the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality and power wasn’t restored to our three main fuel terminals for the Tulsa Metro. Yesterday afternoon that waiver was issued and by early evening yesterday power was restored to all three main fuel terminals. At this point, we just need time for tanker trucks to transport that fuel from the terminals to stores across the city. But the fuel is there.

Most importantly today, the State of Oklahoma this afternoon issued a declaration of emergency for this disaster. I am incredibly grateful for State Senate President Pro Tem Greg Treat signing this declaration in his capacity as Acting Governor. Senator Treat was in Tulsa over the weekend, saw the devastation himself, and when given the opportunity to act did not hesitate to do so. He jumped in his car and drove straight to the Capitol to sign it. This will allow our emergency response team to move forward more quickly and with the confidence that we are not alone in this response. I again want to thank Senator Treat for signing this declaration.

Our residential standup mulch site is officially open at E. Latimer St. & N. 89th East Ave. and free to our normal residential customers and open daily, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. – please be patient if you are in line, we have reports of a lot of people using the site.

Tulsans have two main options for disposing of greenwaste from your yards. You can take it to the drop-off site, and there is no limit to the size or weight of what you bring there. Any greenwaste you can haul and unload is welcome. Or, if you don’t want to do that, you can put it at your curb in 5-foot sections and it will be hauled off by city crews at a later date. We hope to have a schedule for neighborhood pick-ups soon.

Our street crews will continue to work on the downed trees in our neighborhood roads this week and will be collecting some of the massive trees that are in our hardest hit neighborhoods.

With our focus on getting electricity back up throughout the community, if the weatherhead (where power goes into your house) is damaged, an electrician should be called to repair the weatherhead. PSO will not be able to restore service to a damaged weatherhead.

Our City of Tulsa Development Services is ready for storm-related structure repair permits and trade permits. These will be expedited reviews and permits issued on the same day. Inspections for the repair or individual trade will also be on the same day. To schedule an inspection, call (918) 596-9656.

There have been reports of contractors inflating their costs due to the high cost of obtaining permits for weatherheads. This is not true and should be a red flag for consumers. I have received reports of some contractors telling Tulsans the City permit will cost them $1000. The cost for this permit is $93.11 and exists to cover part of the cost for making sure the installation is correct and safe for your home.

A few additional things for residents to know include: Make sure contractors hired to do work are licensed, insured and bonded, make sure roof contractor or trade contractor (mechanical, electrical or plumbing) are licensed through the State of Oklahoma. They should be able to show a valid State license.

Repair permits can be brought to Tulsa City Hall, 175 E. 2nd St. during normal business hours, or they can be emailed to Brian Mathis at [email protected].

Lastly on repair permits – Working in Neighborhoods has Emergency Repair Applications available to qualifying residences for things like weatherhead repairs – Visit www.cityoftulsa.org/WINhousing to download the application and get more information.

I again want to thank all of the teams doing work across the city to help our city get back to normal. We have thousands of people from across the country who are working 24 hours a day to help us respond to this natural disaster. If you see them around the community, please thank them.
