Howlands Neck Ache 12 & 24 Hour Ultra

Hi everyone,

As it’s the time of year we’d traditionally be opening registration for Howland’s Neck Ache, we wanted to take a moment to update you.

We’ve had three amazing years and as most of you know, they weren’t amazing because of great weather, but because of the incredible runners that came out and broke personal records and reached deeper than they knew was possible. Each year, loop after loop, runners never failed to show the true spirit of the ultra running community. For some, this was their first timed race and others couldn’t even count how many they’d done.

However, given the demands of starting businesses, traveling for work, and raising young families, Albert and Dan will be taking a break from directing races and we will not host Howland’s Neck Ache in 2025.

As we reflect, we’re nothing but thankful for the experience and for each of you. We may not see you this spring, but wish you well in planning 2025’s race calendar and choosing some goal that sounds at least a little bit scary.

Hello everyone!

We hope you’re all resting nicely and celebrating each of your milestones! It’s hard to believe another year is in the books but we couldn’t have asked for a better year to be the third running of Howland’s Neck Ache.

We had unprecedented weather, great trail conditions, more runners, several PRs, new CRs and more miles run by everyone than any year before. Wow – we hope you feel accomplished – you earned it!

We’re so thankful for this year and we’re especially thankful for each of you. It’s your attitude and showing up loop after loop that makes this event so special. You guys are the best – so thanks!

Here’s a few quick announcements.

1. Results are on UltraSignup.
2. Photographs will be posted as soon as we have them – thanks Patrick Walsh – we’ve seen some of these already and they loo great! Link to photos to come.
3. Special thanks to DCNR and Vosburg Neck State Park, Friends of Vosburg Neck State Park, and our volunteers. This wouldn’t be possible without them!

We had an awesome time out with Friends of Vosburg Neck State Park and the state park crew this morning for earth day cleanup!!!

We helped empty an old dump site back to nature!!

Made new friends and previewed the trail for the race!!!! We are SO HAPPY to see near perfect conditions!!!!!!!

Bring on the personal and course records!!!

This coming Saturday we will be on site for spreading gravel for the trails and would love to see some of you out there!

Great news…. and we need help!!!

We received the agreement from DCNR to have the race this year! The park management was helpful in walking us through this process of paperwork and they’re excited to have us! It does come with some new requirements (see below).

We’ve got two opportunities to be a part of Howland’s Neck Ache.

The first is a volunteer day on Saturday, April 20.
We’ve got some gravel and trail work from 9AM-12PM. Lunch will be provided, so let us know if you’re coming!

We also need volunteers for the race itself including cross guards, aid station, or timing.
Now that the property is a state park, we have some new requirements in place to ensure we have additional volunteers on hand at all times. We’re looking for 6 hour shifts that begin at 7AM, 1PM, 7PM, and 1AM. Feeling adventurous? Sign up for 12 or 24 hours and take several of the available shifts!

We absolutely LOVE how the running community comes together for things like this in both helping care for the trails and support events. We especially want to make sure we meet the state park’s requirements of staffing as well.

It’s here, the SWAG reveal! We love making this post because not only do we love race SWAG, but this item has been an essential of our own gear since we came across it in 2019.
