Irvine Police Department Submits Case Involving Fullerton Police Chief, Captain to District Attorney
Irvine, Calif. (Aug. 29, 2018) – Today, the Irvine Police Department (IPD) submitted to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office a case involving Fullerton Police Department Chief David Hendricks and Captain Thomas Oliveras. The complaint names both suspects in a case of battery on an Emergency Medical Technician. The District Attorney’s Office will determine whether charges will be filed.
The case stems from an incident that occurred on Friday, Aug. 24, at FivePoint Amphitheatre during a concert at the venue. At 9:42 p.m., IPD officers responded to a disturbance call at the location. The on-scene investigation revealed that two Emergency Medical Technicians who were treating a patient became involved in an altercation with Hendricks and Oliveras. The EMTs had been treating Hendricks’ wife. Both Hendricks and Oliveras were ejected from the venue.
Upon arrival, the Irvine Police Department began a thorough investigation of this incident. The on-scene investigation included interviews of the involved parties, as well as several witnesses. Irvine Police Department leadership was made aware of the incident, as is protocol in any high-profile case. Timely and proper notifications were made to City of Irvine officials, City of Fullerton officials and the District Attorney’s Office.
Over the course of the next several days, an Irvine PD Detective assigned to the case took the lead in continuing the investigation. The investigation included a review of audio recordings of the incident as well as a search for any video that may exist. No video evidence of the alleged crime has been located at this time. The detective has now submitted the case to the District Attorney’s Office for consideration.
The Irvine Police Department worked diligently to conduct a thorough, objective, and timely investigation of this incident. Any further inquiries into this case should be directed to the District Attorney’s Office.
