Meanwhile, at Lake Mendocino… Wow! I have been attempting to get good bald eagle shots for years and they have eluded me. Yesterday was my day! Who says you can’t check bucket list items off in your hometown on a random Saturday afternoon in April?!

As we celebrate Earth Day today, I’m grateful for the beautiful places I’ve been able to explore. Looking forward to seeing much more of this beautiful earth on future adventures!
Blue hour is a magical time for taking photos. Waiting for the last rays of the sun to disappear and extending your shutter speed out to capture that perfect, soft light that evenly falls on everything it touches. This image was taken on a photo trip I took with .snow_photo and in the summer of 2022 in the eastern Sierras of California. Little Lakes Valley was one of my favorite places on that trip. It is a stunningly beautiful spot hampered only by some of the biggest mosquitoes I’ve ever seen! I’ve thought about this night scene and this image a lot since that trip and for some reason just kept putting off putting the image together. It’s been in my head a while, and this last stormy long weekend gave me the space and time to get it out of my head and into the world.

Creativity is an interesting thing. Like most things in life it ebbs and flows; there one minute, gone the next. The last photo I worked on was about 7 months ago. For whatever reason, my creative juice went out like the tides and I had no desire or ambition to work on my photography. About a week ago I was doing some organizing on my computer and happened to click on Lightroom and started scrolling through images from the photo workshop l went on with Joshua Snow in Olympic National Park last summer. This image from an evening spent in the tides of the Pacific Ocean caught my eye and the creative juices started flowing. A BIG thank you to .snow_photo for being my sounding board and allowing me to ping him with images and questions. His trained eye and tremendous skill turn into feedback which helps me grow immensely. If you are looking to expand your vision and skill in photography, I can’t recommend taking a photo workshop with him enough.

If you are going to the Redwood Empire Fair in Ukiah this weekend, swing by the Fine Arts building and check out the photo exhibit. I entered 8 photos and took home 6 first place ribbons and 2 second place ribbons, with one of my photos taking home Best In Show and Best In Division honors!

Someone asked if I had a smaller version of my calendar. I didn’t, but I do now! Using the same images as the larger version, this small version is one sheet of letter size paper, vertically oriented and bound at the top. If you like something a bit more minimalist, this is your best bet! Taking orders now. $20 each.
My photo calendar is back for 2023 and better than ever! This year I went back to the drawing board and redesigned the layout from the ground up and for the first time ever, I am printing and assembling the calendars myself! The result is a higher quality, more customized final product featuring high-quality images printed on glossy photo paper. The calendar looks amazing, and I can’t wait to share it with you!
This year’s calendar features 12 of my favorite shots from the past year, including seven photos from Mendocino County, and five from my travels throughout the year. I feel a few of this year’s featured photos are some of the best shots I’ve ever taken.

I took this photo on my photo workshop in the Eastern Sierras this summer. After being up very late into the night shooting the Milky Way, we got up before any hint of light in the sky to catch the early morning blue hour light on the arch. After capturing those images, we backed up and watched as the sun rose behind us, casting its light on the Sierra mountain range in front of us, creating the beautiful alpine glow.
It was a gorgeous morning and a reminder that sometimes as photographers, we just have to be present, take in the scene, watch the beautiful moment unfold in front of us and press the shutter.

I scouted this shot the night before when I saw this gorgeous golden hour light just before sunset. The light was better the next night when I returned to take the photo. A gorgeous night on the California Coast. This is the shot I was engrossed in taking when I then turned around and saw the full moon rising behind me and I took that shot also. Two great compositions in one night — can’t beat that.

Moonrise on the Mendocino Coast. I was busy photographing the sunset (pic to be posted later) and turned around to leave, without knowing what was happening behind me, to see this beautiful composition with the moon rising in a purple sky. Sometimes you just get lucky!
