Picture this: you receive a beautiful bouquet of cut roses from your special someone, you proudly put them on display, and within a couple of days, your roses are wilted and dropping petals left and right. You'd be bummed, right?
Cut roses, when cared for properly, should last between 7 and 10 days, though we've had customers tell us our roses have lasted upwards of 2 weeks!
We've put together 5 tips to get your roses to last, but first, some rose basics:
A rose's vascular system (how they suck up the water) is a lot like a drinking straw. One thing that causes roses to wilt prematurely is bacteria or debris blocking the end of the stem, so the roses can't drink water! Most of our tips are about controlling bacteria growth in your vase so your flowers will stay fresh!
Here's those tips:
1️⃣ Clean your vessel: before putting roses in your favorite vase, it's important to wash the container to remove any dirt, dust, and bacteria that can clog your rose's vascular system!
2️⃣ Use room temperature water: we've seen the viral boiling water "hack" for hydrangea--step away from the kettle! Extreme temps shock the blooms and shorten their lifespan. Room temperature to lukewarm water is the best bet for long-lasting blooms.
3️⃣ Change the water out: every few days (sooner if the water is cloudy!) replace the water from your vase and be sure to remove any spent leaves, petals, or other debris that can promote bacterial growth. Yuck! It's good practice to snip the ends of the stems every time you change our your water.
4️⃣ Use flower food: we provide packets of pre-mixed flower food to our customers that contain a special blend of sugar to feed the flowers and citric acid to maintain pH balance, among other flower-feeding ingredients! You can also pick up pre-mixed flower food at your local garden center or hardware store. We recommend staying away from DIY solutions like Sprite or crushed-up aspirin; it's much harder to inhibit bacteria!
5️⃣ Keep
A quick before and after of yesterday's wedding ceremony venue at Wright's Mill Farm in Canterbury. Pampas grass added drama and height to the arrangements lining the aisle and on the archway!
