Yesterday on Veterans Day, the Knights of the Inferno Firefighter/Military Motorcycle Club of NJ was honored to dedicate a grave marker to a very special veteran. Sgt. Nathan Mumford was part of the Tuskegee Airmen and served as an Airplane Armorer attached to the 949th Air Engineering Squadron. Sgt. Mumford was inducted into the US Army Air Force on February 13th, 1942. His orders took him to places in Italy such as Naples, North Appenines, Rome-Arno, and Sicily. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and American Service Medal. He was honorably discharged on November 5th 1945. The Knights of the Inferno Motorcycle Club would like to thank the many people and organizations that made this grave marker happen: Billie from Shorelands Memorial Gardens who relayed the information regarding Sgt. Mumford's grave marker to Korean War Veteran and former Commander Frank Wells of the American Legion Post 321 in Union Beach. Mr. Wells then contacted the Knights of the Inferno MC and asked us if we could raise the money needed to make the grave marker a reality. After a few months of fundraising, the Knights of the Inferno Motorcycle Club, American Legion Post 321, and American Legion Post 273 of Keansburg were able to raise the funds to install the grave marker. A huge thank you to all of them. We would also like to thank the Shore Knights and United States Air Force Honor Guard out of Joint Base for their love and support. Please understand that there are many other veterans interred at Shorelands Memorial Gardens that do not have grave markers. Please contact Shorelands to find out how you can sponsor a veteran in an unmarked grave and get them the grave marker they so rightly deserve.
