Meet Richard Bowman, 2023 Heritage Award Recipient

Richard Bowman, a champion old-time fiddler, lives in Mount Airy, North Carolina, where the old-time music and dance community is thriving. Bowman learned to play the autoharp from his mother and later learned from some of the most influential musicians in the area to play the fiddle.

Friends,

With great sadness, the family of Harper and Wansie Van Hoy have concluded that the Old Time Fiddlers and Bluegrass Festival will no longer be held. The family appreciates all who came to fellowship with us in celebration of traditional old time music and bluegrass for 49 years. We deeply appreciate all those who helped in putting the festival on. There are too many people to thank to list. Hopefully, the memories of fiddle music floating over the Grove mixed with laughter and friendships of old and newly made will be fond. We will miss you. I approach my 73rd birthday and have been part of the festival since 1970. This decision is hard emotionally. But I believe the friendships made over the years and the joy of the music are sustaining and lasting.

We are celebrating former Fiddler of the Festival, Ruth Shumway, today! She is beginning her new journey Berklee College of Music! This photo was Ruth's first performance at Fiddler's Grove and after that, her mother says she was hooked for life. She will be studying violin and fiddle performance at Berklee and we couldn't be prouder. Good luck and best wishes, Ruth! We are all rooting for you. Mary Shumway
