Ah the sweet smell of the New Dawn roses which have begun their season. Spring!

We have been hearing nice comments about the new fence up atop this beautiful hill where the Elmwood cemetery is located. It can be seen from the highway See where action was taken to clear the old fence line of dead trees and the remaining healthy trees provide shade for the adjacent cattle. Here are some images taken Sunday morning May 25th. With this strong new fence, efforts to study, repair, and preserve this precious memorial may commence.

The end of May in Monroe County is a happy time. Trees, flowers, lawns, look lush and the greens are brightest now. Birds are singing everywhere School is out. Summer is just around the corner. But it’s important to take a few moments on this Memorial Day weekend to remember those Americans of all races, classes, and both sexes, who died in defense of our system of freedom here in the United States of America. Let us take a little time to remember their ultimate sacrifice.

It’s a crisp, breezy morning at Elmwood. The light effects caused by fast moving clouds obscuring and revealing bright sunshine are most pleasant while contemplating newly emerged leaves.

We were delighted to meet Drew and Chris earlier this week, from Civil War Trails, as they visited to refresh the plaque near the monument. While here, they also maintained the other Civil War Trails plaques around town. The one in the image has been updated with better graphics, including an image of Allen Taylor Caperton, in his prime, painted by Samuel Bell Waugh, on loan here from his descendents. Drew and Chris have quite a large territory to cover, (over 200000 square miles!)and they told us some fascinating stories of their duties. We thanked them for all they do and invited them back for a longer visit.
