ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Penn’s Woods Music Festival (PWMF) offers outstanding chamber music and orchestral performances by professional musicians. Supported jointly by Penn State and the surrounding community, the festival seeks to inspire a passion for classical music through innovative concert programming, educational activities, and informal events. This summer professional orchestral and chamber m

usic festival began in 1986 and has been in its current format since 2008. The festival was created to provide something the community did not have – a professional classical music festival in the summer. PWMF, with a community advisory board, is supported by generous contributions from community volunteers and patrons.

We are saddend to share the news that Maestro Douglas Meyer (Penn's Woods Music Director from 1989-1995) passed away this past week in State College. Under Doug's leadership the festival grew into a four week festival with a full symphonic repertoire. Duiring his tenure, musicians auditioned for the festival, were paid a small living stipend, and were housed in University apartments. The festival grew to have a national reputation attracting talented orchestral musicians to Central PA. In fact, one summer the orchestra had musicians from every continent but Antarctica on the stage at Schwab Auditorium. Doug also brought notable guest conductors and soloists to the festival program. Doug was a walking music encyclopedia. He had such a love for the music. That knowledge was reflected in his varied and sometimes challenging programming both for the performer to execute and the audience to hear! He knew the power of music and that audiences needed to be introduced to unfamiliar works. In addition, Doug was director of orchestras in the Penn State School of Music. He led various ensembles, taught conducting, and guided hundreds of music students on their musical journey, As you will read, after leaving the festival and university, he continued to significanlty impact the musical life of the Centre Region. He will be missed. Bravo! Maestro Meyer, Bravo indeed. https://www.kochfuneralhome.com/obituaries/obituary-listings?obId=32789310&fbclid=IwY2xjawEwSEBleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHTFpg2-3czriLaKqh_vcNRaiReg5U31W-iq9GMW8rgKRAAPHe5zhWM1N5w_aem_Qiowtt5Rpps4YeHKs9-g7w

WOW! What an incredible evening for Music in the Gardens and our first EVER Penn’s Woods Wind Symphony, conducted by Dr. Tonya Mitchell Spradlin. The ensemble was made up of School of Music faculty, emeritus faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, staff members, alumni, and State College community members. “American Treasures” was simply a perfect evening, and it’s safe to say that our festival is off to a fantastic start!

The Zehngut brothers return to State College a week from today! When asked about their excitement to return to Penn's Woods Music Festival, Jeffrey Zehngut (violin soloist) shared, “The musicians of Penn's Woods made an indelible impression on me as an aspiring violinist growing up in State College. I cannot express my gratitude for the opportunity to perform at the very festival that has inspired me for so many years.”

Gareth Zehngut (viola soloist) also reflected on PWMF! "Growing up in State College, I was extremely fortunate to be exposed every summer to the wonderful music-making that happens at Penn's Woods. I still remember the excitement of taking lessons with guest artists. To now be invited to perform at Penns Woods in this capacity is an incredible honor for me," Gareth shared.

This first Festival Orchestra Concert will feature guest artists Jeffrey Zehngut (violin) and Gareth Zehngut (viola) performing Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola! Originally from State College, Jeffrey and Gareth are both currently members of the Cleveland Orchestra. The program also includes Il Matrimonio Segreto Overture (Cimarosa) and Gounod's Symphony No. 1. The festival orchestra is conducted by our beloved Maestro Gerardo Edelstein!
