Theatre and Performance Studies (TAPS) at GSU considers performing the stories of others, as we

ll as of the self, imperative for initiating and sustaining a dialogue of shared human experience across identities, diversities, and desires. TAPS provides students with an understanding of the role of storytelling on stage and in everyday life, awareness of cultural diversity and civic engagement, as well as heightened communication, leadership, teambuilding, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. The program seeks to create well-rounded students, cultivating creative, critical, collaborative, and compassionate voices that move toward fulfilling careers and meaningful lives. Beyond course work that targets performance technique, application, design, history, analysis, theory, and criticism, students are asked to participate in main stage productions throughout their program of study, providing continued opportunities to enhance their skills. Furthermore, students are encouraged to gain professional experience by participating in internship opportunities throughout the Chicagoland area. Ultimately, TAPS prepares students—as artists, citizens, and scholars—for work in all aspects of theatre, whether onstage, backstage, or in arts administration; for employment in civic engagement, activism, nonprofit organizations, public relations, among others; as well as for graduate study. Meet David Schur, who plays Senator Laius/ Mr. Zyclo/ Nice American Father/ Pascal/ Ensemble in upcoming production of "Anon(ymous)"

Describe the story of Anon(ymous). What are its themes? What does it get us thinking about?

"The play is about a boy named Anon who is in search for his family, and he meets some strange people along his path. Some of the themes you encounter would be scary, funny, and excitement."

What does Anon(ymous) mean to you?

"It means to never give up and keep searching on where we belong. That when we feel alone to remember that we aren't really alone that there's people all around us, and that sometimes the people that we meet aren't always so kind."

What excites you most about this production?

"What excites me is that I get to be part of something wonderful and being able to share that with the audience. I also enjoy the people that I get to work with they are fun and full of life. This is my first play and I'm very happy to be a part of it."

Meet Lynne Clayton who plays Helen Laius/ Zyclo’s Pet Bird/ Nice American Mother/ Ritu/ Ensemble in upcoming production of "Anon(ymous)"

Describe the story of Anon(ymous). What are its themes? What does it get us thinking about?

"Identity and family. It is an immigration story, but it is about finding "home" and knowing that you do belong. The lead character, Anon, calls themselves Anon or Nobody or any other name that comes to them when asked their name. They do this because they don't know who they are or where they belong, and not out of amnesia, but out of the bigger world picture of "why am I here in the universe and where do I belong". Anon is desperately looking for their mother in hopes of finding the anchor that will allow them to know who they are and who they belong to, giving Anon their identity."

What does Anon(ymous) mean to you?

"Being an immigration story, it is very relevant today. What/who is family? Where is home? How do I make myself safe and seen and known? These are questions we all have at one time or another about ourselves, as we live through the chapters of our lives, many good, some traumatic. Anon(ymous) is about finding and grounding oneself, and in that way, knowing oneself."

Describe the rehearsal process. What discoveries have you been making?

"Elevated play reading is new to me. I am enjoying the choreography of it all. Looking in a direction or having a reaction all cued by a word or a series of words. It is hard."

What have you learned about theatre or performing from working on this production?

"This play requires everyone - actors, production staff and audience to use more senses than they normally need for a traditional play performance."

Meet Jai Sales who plays "Anon" in 's upcoming production of"Anon(ymous)".

What does "Anon(ymous)" mean to you?

"'Anon(ymous)' means to me, beating the odds. With all the challenges Anon faced, he still kept going and succeeded in his objective. It gives you a sense of hope."

What have been the highlights and challenges so far?

"The highlight is most definitely the cast and directors. A challenge would be conveying the right emotion when in a scene. Some lines make me want to laugh but I have to be professional."

What can the audience expect from this production?

"They can expect to leave the theater and see things from a different, closer lens. Often times we are so removed from situations that don't involve us until they are thrown smack dab in your face."

Come watch Jai in "Anon(ymous)" Nov 6-9 at Governors State University’s Sherman Hall.
