The flower cooler has been powered down for the season.

This time of year is always so bittersweet. We have supplied Helena with fresh flower since March! That’s almost a full 8 months of fresh blooms!

It’s always sad to let go of the fresh flowers, but the seasons march on and we have plenty of work to do to keep us on our toes!

We are already prepping for our 2024 season. We dug our 800 dahlia tubers this week, planted 300 daffodils, 200 allium, 60 peonies and some cold hardy annual seeds.

Next week we’ll start planting our 16,000 tulips which is no small feat, but I know you’ll love them after we’ve had another Montana winter.

Cheers to you for supporting a small, local regenerative farm who has big dreams.

Some weeks are harder than others in farming.

How does the saying go…when it rains it pours?

Our cooler has broken down once this week, we’re supposed to teach a class outside tomorrow in what is forecasted as the hottest, smokiest day of the year, and we’ve been informed by our tulip bulb supplier that the worst bulb harvest in history has taken place due to the climate crisis. 😩

I allow myself time to feel all the feelings, and then just as farmers all across the world are doing, we pivot.

We had another magical evening in the flowers with the talented .

This photo was from last season. I really enjoy capturing little moments like this that -

a.) help me feel a little more glamorous and feminine than my normal sweaty dirty self

b.) to celebrate each season

It’s so easy to just put my head down and grind in this profession, but these photos help me pause, reflect and feel gratitude for each season I get to be a flower farmer.

Thank you, Kelly!

Swimming in the sea of the globe thistle.

The damage we experienced with the first harvestable stems seems to have disappeared with the remainder of the crop.

While we do think it has to do with the tarnished plant bugs, typically when we see an infestation we wait and see what beneficials will show up on the job to balance out nature.

Welcoming the weekend with open arms.

I spy Katie Sister .bechard harvesting some sweet peas while I tackled the statice.

The farm feels like a jungle right now. I keep telling myself there are more flowers than weeds, but I think that’s just something I say to get myself to sleep at night.

A lot of flowers are coming on sooner than we anticipated with the heat.

On the flip side a lot of our heat loving annuals were wayyy behind after the lovely cool rainy June we experienced.

Every year is so different, but it’s hard not to play the comparison game, especially when you’re counting on flowers for weddings - I’m looking at you zinnias!

It’s a wild ride, but I’m here for all of it. ✨

I know I share a lot of pretty flower pictures here, but I also want to share some of the realities of farming so you get a more comprehensive view.

Turns out the farm has a healthy infestation of tarnished plant bugs (you can see them on the amaranth here). They are not causing catastrophic loss, but it’s noticeable. Forgive my pun, but it bugs me.

Spraying of any kind is not an option, nor will it ever be. We do lose flowers, but we are of the mind set that we are part of an ecosystem, and that means bugs will eat our plants.

It’s difficult when it becomes an economic loss, but we always try and plant more than we need.

The longer I do this profession, the more I believe that life’s lessons can always be found in the garden.

We're just less than a month away from our Field to Vase Class! This class is extra special because it's not very often that I get to share the farm with the community. You all have a way of filling me up so I'm glad I could get this on our schedule.

As much as I wish we could offer more fresh flower classes, our wedding and CSA line up has us on our toes the majority of flower season!

Don't miss your chance to take a stroll with me through the farm, and then get the chance to make your own creation with flowers fresh from the farm.

There is no experience necessary. I will give a demonstration geared towards beginners, but I'm sure any flower lover will learn a thing or two. Sign up on our website.

I look forward to seeing you at Field to Vase on 08/17!

I went to examine the globe thistle this morning to harvest the first of one of my favorite crops.

From afar, I could see that they were starting to change from pale gray to the crisp blue color we all can’t get enough of.

As I went to cut the first stem I noticed some dry spots on the flowers. As I looked around to its neighbors, it appeared that whatever had happened to this one flower was widespread.

So much for a foolproof crop! I have scoured the internet, read through all my books and and have two inquiries out to our extension agents to try and solve this riddle.

We have experienced some hail this season, so I’m not sure if that’s the culprit or some kind of pest. Tarnished plant bug was mentioned on a flower farmer forum, but I’ve never had issues with them before.

While I’m super bummed to experience crop failure of any kind, I know this is a good learning experience, and will only make me a better farmer in the long run.
