the Maribel Caves Hotel was a place where one could ‘immerse themselves in fine bathing, boating, and fishing.’ Located on County R, the hotel was built by an Austrian immigrant named Charles Steinbrecher in 1900.

In 1985, tragedy struck the hotel when it was engulfed in flames. Tragedy struck again in 2013 when a tornado swept through the area and damaged what was left of the hotel.

Not only is the inn known for its ghost stories, but also known to have been frequented by gangsters. When prohibition was introduced and the 18th Amendment was passed in 1920, many people in the United States still wanted to enjoy beer and spirits. With that came the notorious bootleggers and organized crime running the show. According to reports, John Dillinger allegedly frequented the hotel as a stopover on his way to Eagle River. It is also said that the notorious Al Capone was known to visit the hotel.

Port Washington was picked as the mural's home by the Canadian-based Mural Mosaic's Global Roots Project. Creation of the mural required 1,500 participants from the Midwest and throughout North America. Here's a short Timelapse of the installation. Huge shout out to Port Washington Main Street for making this happen for the city.
