The lifting of pandemic capacity restrictions repaves the Great White Way.
into the pandemic, countless aspects of what was once everyday life have grown foreign. Near the top of the list is live theater. Sitting in a dark room with hundreds or thousands of strangers, watching dozens more strangers on stage, a story unfolding in the collective space — all feels hard to r...

The disappearance of a rare fabric and what it takes to bring it back.
Nearly 200 years ago, Dhaka muslin was the most valuable fabric on the planet. Then it was lost altogether. How did this happen? And can we bring it back?
In the 1970's, my mom gave me a pantsuit for Christmas. I had to ask the head of the department where I worked if I could wear it to work so he could approve my wearing the PANTS to work. Seriously. He approved it, but then he couldn't refuse me as my 22-year-old self stood before him modeling the outfit.
Not-so-fun fact: Until January 31st of 2013, it was illegal for women in France to wear trousers. It made headlines at the time when a 200 year-old law requiring women to ask police for special permission to “dress as men” or else risk being taken into custody, was finally revoked. The law had b...

While some have criticized the costume design for "Bridgerton," I think it is brilliant for this corset ripper of a romantic fantasy. One should costume for the character being portrayed.
The period drama Bridgerton is on everyone's watchlist, but the striking costumes that embellish the love story don't rely on history.
Extraordinary costuming for A Discovery of Witches. I'm in awe.
Bead net dresses from Ancient Egypt.
Fashion trends are not just a modern construction. In ancient Egypt, looking fashionable was an important part of everyday life, especially for the elite members of society. One of the high class fashions was the bead-net dress. Although historians were aware of artistic depictions of females wearin...
Notes from a Costumer:
Fortunately, I came to rehearsal last night. I found that two new men were added to be young Marley and a monk and the other to be a monk. There are now 7 monks. Also, _______ was a Cratchit. Now she is at Fezziwig’s Regency period party. And little _______ is now _________’s Cratchit sister. And the new _______ (young Marley from the Regency period) may or may not be in the opening number as a town’s person. I will need to be at rehearsal each week to see what has changed.
Fortunately, I had only cut out young Marley’s costume for a larger actor so I can cut that down and had cut out _______’s Victorian dress which I will now cut down for _______ and make sure I have a Victorian dress for _______. Now I will need to make a new Regency dress for _______ (I’ve been through inventory and there isn’t a dress that will work for the scene) so I pulled fabric hoping I can get a Regency dress out of it for _________.
All I ask is that the director let me know….communicate….when [the director] makes changes as I am and have been working full-time to ensure that the show has the costumes we agreed to. Time is running out for me with the photo shoot being moved back to Monday, Nov. 6th
I would really appreciate your help in letting [the director] know how important communication is.
Thank you,
Judith
