Had the pleasure of providing the soundtrack to A'ja Wilson Unapologetic Girls Summit this morning/afternoon. She’s amazing and I hope the 100+ girls who spent the day talking, laughing, dancing, and eating with the M’VP know how amazing and special they are. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this dope event.

Take it from a DJ:

1. You don’t need to have a 5 hour event, unless it’s a wedding. (3 hours is perfect, 4 hours are great as well)

2. The placement of your DJ matters. If the DJ can’t see the dance floor or if the speakers are too far, it will definitely affect the outcome of your party. (Why is the cake in front of the dance floor but your DJ is all the way in the corner? Does that make sense? Decorators care about what’s pretty but you need functionality and efficiency, include your DJ before they finalize the floor layout)

3. Don’t put your grandparents or any older guests next to or in front of the speakers. (Self-explanatory but it’s loud and will be even louder if we have to push sound from a corner all the way to the middle of the room; see #2. They’ll be mad and we can’t turn it down for them)

4. Be realistic about your event vision and make sure your guests are aware if it’s something non-traditional. (You tell the DJ you want to turn all the way with new music but 85% of your guest are 65+ *not realistic *. You have a baby shower on a Sunday that you want to feel like a day party with dranks but your guests don’t know that so they come with the mindset of a normal baby shower on chill with their kids.)

5. You don’t need 8 hours for a wedding and reception. (This is your friends and family 1 of 2 days off for the week and you expect them to spend a whole work shift with you? It starts at 3 so they get there at 2:30 and you still expect they’ll want to be with you at 10:30? That’s not realistic)

6. For weddings, hire a planner….a good one. (They will save you money on vendors because they have relationships and a good one will make your life and your vendors lives easy.)

I started with zero clients, zero followers, and a few dollars left over from my college refund check and here I am. The biggest thing is that I started and I stayed consistent. That’s the secret. My happy place. Music has really taken me to places, given me things, and allowed me to make so many connections that money couldn’t. A young lady who is a fairly new DJ asked me last week how I got booked for a specific event and when I thought about it later, the simple answer would be “All the stars aligned”. I say that a lot because it’s the only way to describe some of the opportunities I’ve been given to do what I love to do and get paid well for it. In reality, preparation, hard work, opportunity, and GODs timing all met at an intersection. This is 14 years of full time grind as well…I never treated my brand or business like a part-time hustle. I sacrificed a lot to get here. I’m thankful for the people who have helped me along the way and for those who continue to give me opportunities to bring dope vibes to different spaces.
