Unsolicited, Unpopular Opinions of a Humble Photographer⌠đ
1. Timing is not everything. â°
Potential client inquiries often want to make sure theyâre getting a FULL session of an hour or more. My return clients know that if we book a full session, more often than not, we will be done in 20-30 minutes. THATâS WHY THEY COME BACK!
NOTE: There is a huge difference in being efficient and being rushed. Efficiency takes effort on BOTH sides; client and photographer.
2. Location is not everything. đď¸
Landscapes can add grandeur, donât get me wrong, but donât put off pictures because your location is not open, close enough, right season, etc. Book your session in your own back yard! I have captured gorgeous sessions that took place in the most unlikely of âtrendyâ choices.
3. The purchaser is the end-all opinion. đ˛
From outfits to grouping poses, the one who paid is the one who gets the final say. I will always refer to the Matriarch over all others if she booked the session.
4. Let the kids cry! đ
Small children can feel parentâs anxiety. Mom and dad have saved money for pictures, theyâve planned outfits, and kept everyone clean from home to location.. itâs stressful!! Kids are overloaded before they even arrive for photos.
If they want to throw a fit, I capture it.
If I can play with them and grab candid shots, I capture it.
However I will most likely not pro-long a session UNTIL we get a smile. Trust me, it is better to hang the crying picture on the wall than to traumatize your kids. I might get your kids to smile for a picture, but my goal is to have them ENJOY OUR SESSION. If they remember that it wasnât that bad, they will feel better about coming back to see me next year. Some kids warm up in 15 minutes, some kids warm up over 3 years of consistent effort. (This advice goes for grumpy husbands as well đ)
5. DONâT EXPECT PHOTOSHOP MIRACLES đŤ
You want to be thinner? You want every infant looking forward and smiling? You want someoneâs significant other out of the photo?
You want perfection.
However, this is reality. EMBRACE IT.
I will always try to eliminate the unexpected (acne, bumps/bruises, wet pants- itâs happened) but I will not change reality and you should not expect it just because youâve heard the technology is out there. I take every request into account, but also highly recommended embracing the moment as it happened, itâs all part of the memory and stage of life.
6. Find your fit đ¸
All parties will enjoy the final results if you find a photographer based on the style you want rather than ask a photographer to match a style outside their portfolio. Donât know what you like? Search local photographers online and review their work instead of going to Pinterest!
7. DO NOT ASK FOR âCHEAPâ! EVER!! đľ
One of my biggest peeves is seeing ââŚlooking for someone that doesnât charge an arm and a leg forâŚâ
First: Nobody in a service profession accepts body parts instead of monetary payment.
Second: You will get GOOD feedback with targeted inquiries, example: âIâm looking for a photographer in this time frame within this budget willing to shoot at this locationâ
Third: Itâs ok to use different photographers in different stages of life.
Money is tight?
Find a beginner running a special.
Photographs are a high priority this year?
Find an experienced professional with a consistent portfolio in the style you desire.
There are DOZENS of options in between and keep an eye out for deals.
8. Thereâs no such thing as too early đď¸
I have clients that book their next session a year in advance. I have had juniors book their senior sessions long before the school year starts. They know that the earlier you book, the more likely to get exactly when and where you want. Also, payment plans are nice.
9. If youâre on time, youâre late. âď¸
For a session to start on time, everyone should arrive a few minutes early to walk to location, apply lip gloss, put on final accessories, etc. If you are late, be accountable. Donât ask for more time added to the session, donât expect to get everything you want included in the time left, and donât make it a habit.
10. PHOTO SESSIONS SHOULD BE ENJOYABLE!! â¤ď¸
At the end of the day, it shouldnât feel like torture. If it does, you havenât found your fit so keep looking.
XOXO đ
