Directors and staff of addiction recovery ministries from all over the state of Alabama are at a retreat in Pensacola, FL; and I was blessed to bring these them some comedic relief last night at their banquet. I love these people!!

I’m a new sub at two local elementary schools, and only do it occasionally as fits in with my schedule. So; I’m still a new face to most of the staff and students. I have a bag full of tricks I take each day to have some fun with the kiddos. Today, in first grade, I brought “Freda”, the firefly, which is just a little red light I can make light up by squeezing between my fingers. At one point, I “threw” Freda up into the air and “caught” her in my mouth, and then moved my tongue around in my cheeks to make them think Freda was in my mouth. Of course they were amazed. Later, in the cafeteria, as the principal was walking around visiting with kids, one of my students pointed at me, and hollered out to him across the way, “HEY!! She eats bugs!!!” 🐜 🐞
I immediately thought of the mental image the principal must have of me now. You know the Everybody Loves Raymond show with the woman who ate flies?
Yeah, that. 😳😬

My sweet, Jesus-loving mama is in the final stage of Alzheimer’s. We thought she was about to leave us this past Friday. Her nurse said she was actively dying. Most days she has no idea where she is, even though she is in her own home of eight years. Even in her home, she can’t remember which way to go to get from one room to the other. She has lost about 95% of her memories. She can’t call her grandchildren’s names, and can’t remember who her three children are most days. Not long ago I asked her to count backwards from ten, since that is on the list of things Alzheimer’s patients cannot do in the final stage. We just wanted to know. She began, “25, 24, 21, 23,” and ended with, “that was pretty good, wasn’t it!” She can’t remember her address, where deodorant goes, or that she and daddy founded the Mission of Hope and spent 46 years living and serving there. She doesn’t even remember what the mission is; and it was their life!😢😢😢
But would you look at what she does remember? She had a couple of good days over the weekend. Her breathing wasn’t labored after we just knew we were losing her on Friday. Over and over, as we would call out a scripture reference, she could recite it word for word. She still couldn’t recall much of anything else; but she knew her Bible. Now that, my friends, is hiding God’s Word in your heart.

EDIT: I wanted to explain that the reason her nurse said she is actively dying is because mama has a significant blockage in a major artery, as well as a leaky heart valve. Her heart is just giving out. Her oxygen levels just drop out of nowhere. If she remains with us, she will be 88 on Christmas Day.
