August is Gastroparesis Awareness Month.
Gastroparesis, also called delayed gastric emptying, is a motility disorder. Gastrointestinal motility is the movement of food through the digestive system. Problems with this process are known as dysmotility.
Gastroparesis occurs when the stomach slows down or stops working, causing food to remain in the stomach for longer.
Symptoms of gastroparesis include:
🔵Nausea
🔵Vomiting
🔵Abdominal pain
🔵Bloating
🔵Belching
🔵Weight loss
🔵Feeling full at the beginning of a meal
🔵Feeling full long after a meal
Symptoms of gastroparesis can range from mild to severe and can affect people of any body weight.
Gastroparesis is more common in people with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD).
It is often managed with dietary changes, medications, and other treatments.
