I’ve been putting this off for a couple of weeks, simply because I didn’t know what to say. The last month has been a whirlwind for us, and there are so many things that go into a decision like this one that you never even consider until they’re upon you. But now is the time to let everyone know: Statement has closed. We’ve put on our last event, and our family will be leaving Washington to start a new adventure.

The only thing that I can say to all of you who have watched us grow from doing small appetizer receptions to cooking classes to an 8 course meal for the best in the business is thank you. Without your support, your belief in us and our mission, and your willingness to take a chance on a couple of chefs who rolled into town from California with a whole lot to prove, we would never have accomplished what we have. The people we’ve met and the friendships we’ve forged will never be forgotten.

To say we’re grateful is an understatement. You all are incredible, and we know that the food and wine culture here will only improve in the years to come. We look forward to visiting and seeing what great things are in store for you. We wish you all the very best.

With love,

Eric and Jennifer Dohrman

What a weekend! We’ve finally recovered, and another Women of dinner is in the books! It’s always a little emotional to think about how much time and effort went into planning, preparing and executing an event like this, but seeing photos of the finished product always make it worth it! A huge thank you to everyone involved and to all those who attended; we’ve come a long way from that room at Baum’s house of chocolate! Here’s to !

Last but certainly not least is Sarah Goedhart of Hedges Family Estates, the fourth of the Women of Washington Wine Dinner’s original four winemakers.

Where are you from?

I was born in Buenos Aires, so I guess I am technically from there, but I spent most of my youth in Washington State.

How long have you been making wine?

My first vintage was in Santa Barbara in 2003, boy does that feel like a long time ago!
What is your favorite herb?

Thyme! Mostly because it goes so well with roasted mushrooms and I LOVE roasted mushrooms!

What is your favorite spice?

Cumin! it's so versatile and adds surprising flavors to a lot of different types of food.

What is your favorite wine?

This is always a tough one!  I love wine I don't have to think about or analyze. Give me a light, dry rose on a sunny patio and I am a happy camper.

What hobbies do you have when you're not making amazing wine?

Baking bread, cooking, gardening (indoor and outdoor plants....my house is bit of a jungle), walking/hiking (movement of any kind), hanging with my family and boating on the river. I love being creative. Too many things! I am always doing something, life it just too fun!

What's one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I am a total introvert (like, really bad) and I have an addiction to cooking magazines. I love flipping through them, but rarely ever make a recipe from them!

Sarah opened last year’s event with a cocktail made from her sparkling wine, and this year she’s closing it out with her Red Mountain Fortified. Pastry Chef Jennifer is going to knock it out of the park with this one!

We’ve featured all of the winemakers, but the menu itself doesn’t feature all of the food on offer…guess you’ll have to see for yourselves what we have up our sleeves! Thanks so much to the winemakers for answering these questions; we can’t wait to see you NEXT WEEK for the big event!

Two winemakers to go… tonight we feature Kahryn Campbell of Anelare winery, another of the first four winemakers included in the women of dinner.

Where are you from?

Born and raised in the Tri Cities

How long have you been making wine?

15 years

What is your favorite herb?

Dill… and Rosemary too!

What is your favorite spice?

Clove

What is your favorite wine?

Washington Syrah

What hobbies do you have when you're not making amazing wine?

Anything active & outside or cooking! Hiking, golfing, biking, trying new recipes.

What's one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I’ve summited 3 mountains in the NW… something I never thought I would do!!!

The Anelare Petit Verdot is paired with venison for our final savory course, and it’s a pretty adventurous pairing. Can’t wait to see what you all think of it!

Sixth in our feature is Cassie Welch of Longship wines! She’s bringing the second of our three red wines and this course gets us ready for the entree.

Where are you from?

I was born in Santa Cruz, CA but was raised in Richland, WA.

How long have you been making wine?

My husband, Kyle, makes our beautiful wines and I manage the other side of our business (tasting room, wine club, social media, financials). When we got married 11 years ago we had no idea we would make such a great team working together to create something so much bigger than us. We made our first vintage (Tempranillo and Syrah) in 2013 but the real fun started when we opened our tasting room at the end of 2016.

What is your favorite herb?

Cilantro, I especially love it on tacos!

What is your favorite spice?

Himalayan Pink Salt, I put it on pretty much everything.

What is your favorite wine?

Grenache, Malbec and Sauv Blanc. But my favorite wine this year has been our 2020 Rose, it's Grenache dominate with a little Syrah and it has so much flavor! Strawberry and watermelon with hints of kiwi and citrus.

What hobbies do you have when you're not making amazing wine?

I love hanging out with my husband, dogs and family (I’m the youngest of 5 so there’s a lot of us). I also love yoga, baking and puzzles.

What's one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I got my degree in Business Management because I wanted to open a coffee shop to create a space for community. That dream manifested just in a different beverage - wine instead of coffee.

Featuring the Lady Wolf Malbec is going to be a treat for the guests! Just ten days to go!

Tonight’s winemaker feature is Kelly Hightower from Hightower Cellars!

Where are you from?

I was born in Patuxent River, Maryland, but I mostly grew up in Washington State

How long have you been making wine?

Since 1997 - this will be our 25th Harvest

What is your favorite herb?

Ginger. Tarragon is a close 2nd

What is your favorite spice?

Smoked Paprika

What is your favorite wine?

Varietally - Cabernet and Merlot, Growing Area - Red  Mountain - so much flavor and texture in the wines.

What hobbies do you have when you're not making amazing wine?

Besides enjoying wine - hot yoga and reading

What's one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

When I was little to entertain (or more likely scare the pants off) of adults, I would stand underneath an elevator and stop it with my head.

The Hightower Merlot is the first red on the Women of dinner menu, and the first of our three heavier protein courses. We’re honored to have Kelly with us this year for the event! Photo credit: Kim Fetrow.

Next up is another one of the original winemakers from the first women of dinner, Shae Frichette from Frichette Winery!

Where are you from?

Marion, South Carolina

How long have you been making wine?

Only a few years

What is your favorite herb?

Rosemary

What is your favorite spice?

Cumin

What is your favorite wine?

Rosé, Cab, Malbec, Syrah, basically anything in my glass.

What hobbies do you have when you're not making amazing wine?

Writing

What's one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I was on a World Champion Double-Dutch Team in  Jr. High School and I hate Ketchup but love tomatoes.

Shae’s bringing a Rosé from Sashay wines, her personal wine label, as a transition from whites to reds in the tasting progression. It’s a perfect fit for the menu!

Today’s winemaker is one of the four that has been a part of the women of dinner since its inception in 2019, Amy Johnson of !

Where are you from?

I was born and raised on a 3 generation Dairy Farm in Brush Prairie Washington (just north of the town of Vancouver).

How long have you been making wine?

My husband and I started our winery in 2008.  He was the primary winemaker and I have been learning on the job ever since.  We approach things as a team and make the decisions together in the cellar as they arise.

What is your favorite herb?

This is tough to narrow down to only one! I’d say the ones I probably use the most are Rosemary and Cilantro.  Both are so versatile in so many dishes.

What is your favorite spice?

Again, hard to narrow it down but I am definitely a fan of Salt! The origin of the Salt has a big impact on flavor and texture and salt can be used to both enhance savory dishes and also balance out sweetness in desserts.

What is your favorite wine?

Do I have to narrow it down? I will say Rosè because it can go with just about anything, friends, sunshine or lake time! In our family we like to pair Rosè with Thanksgiving as it can cut through the heavy sauces and herbs without competing with the flavors. Truthfully though, I will never turn down any glass of wine, there is so much to taste and discover, we should always say yes to the chance of trying new wine!

What hobbies do you have when you’re not making amazing wine?

Not really a hobby, but hanging out with our three kids, who are soon to be gone.  I really do enjoy gardening and making meals from the bounty, but have not been able to do it lately.  Mostly I like creating meals and moments where friends and family come together.

What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

My BA from Washington State University is Animal Science Production Management, a long way of saying Dairy Farming.  It may seem far from winemaking, but there is a lot of cross over in knowledge of stages of fermentation (aerobic and anaerobic) food grade sanitation, equipment use and overall physicality of the production.

Next in our winemaker’s feature is Jessica Munnell from !

Where are you from?

Originally born in CA but grew up in Tri Cities

How long have you been making wine?

Switched from viticulture to the dark side of winemaking in 2003.

What is your favorite herb?

Cilantro!  Anyone that doesn’t like cilantro, I’ll take theirs too.
What is your favorite spice?

Salt – it makes everything taste better, including wine.

What is your favorite wine?

That’s like choosing a favorite child, which changes depending on the day. All joking aside, I really love making and drinking Malbec.

What hobbies do you have when you're not making amazing wine?

Spending time with my husband and two kids.  Whether that is making dinner and hanging out at home together or travelling to other wine regions around the world (when we can travel again).  We love to travel; we love to experience food and wine all over the world.

What's one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I began my career as a viticulturist after doing research on wine grapes for a master’s degree.  I had no idea I would become a winemaker.

We couldn’t be more happy to have Jessica at the dinner with us this year, and to pair a course with her Sauvignon Blanc!

We’re just over two weeks away from the women of dinner and we couldn’t be more excited! We wanted to introduce our stellar lineup of winemakers to you, starting with Megan Hughes from !

Where are you from?

Born and Raised in the beautiful Tri City area by two native Californians.

How long have you been making wine?

I grew up in the wine industry and have very early memories helping out in both the vineyard and winery. I have been professionally paid in the industry for 11 years.

What is your favorite herb?

Lemon Verbena. Its fun to play in the kitchen with and I love to just smell it. I also enjoy peoples reaction to how intense and wonderful it smells when they are in the garden.

What is your favorite spice?

I am currently cooking for a wonderful 11 month old and trying to use as many spices as I can to introduce flavor. A favorite is ginger and “lemon squeeze” by a local producer

What is your favorite wine?

I love most wine. I tend to always enjoy sparkling wine. Washington Grenache is also really fun to explore now as well.

What hobbies do you have when you're not making amazing wine?

My husband and I love to paddleboard and enjoy the outdoors. We also love to travel. I have spent a lot of time in the garden recently and am enjoying the new experiences motherhood brings.

What's one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I love the water and a good adventure. Those combined led me to swim with Great White Sharks.

Thanks so much for joining us Megan, we can’t wait to pair a course with your Albariño! Stay tuned for the rest of the lineup!
