This past spring we had the opportunity to work with Michelin Star chef Michael Diaz de Leon for an event. Chef gave me the leftover marinade we used for the leg of lamb. I froze it with the intent to use it in my own lamb dinner. Instead, I decided to use chicken thighs. One word. INCREDIBLE.

It was a weekend of burgers and sandwiches and let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint.

And for you cheese curd lovers out there, Wisconsin really has the best. (Unfortunately, we devoured it before I got a chance to take a pic).

Beautiful weather to spend time in our backyard. Tom’s smoker took on a pork shoulder and the smoker won. It took a long time but well worth it. Juicy and tender, this is my favorite smoked item yet!

It was a fun Gurrl’s birthday lunch! You may not be able to tell, but this was a great grilled Caesar salad. I opted to add crispy pork belly, which gave it a nice salty component.

(And you can never have too much fresh grated Parmesan. 😅)

All this rain gets me in a soup kind of mood. This time it’s one of my favorites: wonton noodles with shrimp dumplings. I didn’t have any chicken or vegetable stock on hand so I opted to use beef stock. It gave the broth a more savory, umami flavor. Topped with baby bok choy, shiitake and woodear mushrooms, this dish was truly a winner!

Whether buffet or plated, I love the look on the bride’s and groom’s faces when they see the beautiful menu they put together. This was such a beautiful day for Sydney + Austin!

With Father’s Day coming up, do you have dad’s favorite beverage ready? Try a spin on his favorite cocktail.

Here’s my take on a Bloody Mary. It was inspired by one of my favorite eateries up north. Why stop with just a beef jerky stick?

(This drink is also great as a Virgin Bloody Mary, but hey, we’re celebrating, right? 😉)

Taking a break to recognize a wonderful milestone: Jasmine’s high school graduation!

I thought we were ready for this. I really did. Until yesterday, the morning of her graduation. Tom and Jacob sitting next to me didn’t help. Talking to other friends in the audience who were also there for their own kids’ graduations didn’t help. (And the hard metal benches we sat on definitely didn’t help.)

What DID help in that moment, however, was knowing that somehow Tom and I did a pretty good job raising this beautiful, confident young woman who literally sprouted before our eyes.

I remember when she first started working with me at tastings at 8 years old. She set the table, folded the napkins and watered the glasses. During one tasting, I remember hearing something in the corner and I realized she was spying from behind a stack of chairs.

From that moment to watching her run her last track meet at State Championships to yesterday’s graduation. We are all proud of her and I know ma is smiling down from Heaven.

To our dear Jasmine,
Dad and I are forever proud. You set high goals for yourself throughout high school and you literally surpassed them all. We are honored and blessed to call ourselves your parents. We know you will soar in life and like Bette Midler’s song, we will be the wind beneath your wings. We love you.

One of my favorite vegetarian dishes on our menu is the gnocchi with pesto cream sauce. I happened to have most of the ingredients in my fridge (except for feta cheese) and decided to make a big bowl for the fam. When you have something this flavorful, you don’t miss the protein!

(Although I can imagine some sautéed garlic shrimp on top…)

One of the things I love about this industry is the relationships Tom and I have built over the years. What started out as vendors became friends. What I took for granted in my earlier catering years is that you can’t do this job alone. It really does take a village to put together an incredible event. The planners, photographers, videographers, DJ, rental companies, production companies, venues, bartenders, florists, consultants, cake artists. The list goes on.

To all those who Tom and I have had the pleasure to meet and get to know, thank you for the friendship and laughter. To those we have not had the chance to meet, let’s get together for a coffee or a glass of wine.

As we were setting up for this event, I couldn’t help but admire the beauty of this room. It’s stunning even with no decor. The vibrant pop of color enhanced this already beautiful space.

I love it when families cook together. As the weather warms up, Tom’s smoker comes out. His latest and greatest is this smoked Chilean sea bass. Jacob made the Meyer lemon shallot oil. I roasted the Brussels sprouts. ☺️ What do you and your family like to cook (or do) together?

When I’m waist deep in wedding season, I try to take care of myself by eating better, staying hydrated, exercising more regularly and getting proper sleep (of course this last one has been quite the challenge). I can’t be best for our clients if I’m not at my best.

What a fun night! This year’s Star Awards theme was cheeky academia. School cafeteria food but we like to put in our fun spin: house made pimento boats, shrimp cocktail, deviled eggs, “peanut butter and jelly” noodles. Don’t let the principal catch you eating in the hallway!

We wanted to try something new and fun for our company party this year.
