Our Story
All Score Urbana is a community music composition program that engages with Champaign-Urbana’s residents in familiar public spaces. Rather than treating composition as a solitary act, young and new composers are able to work collaboratively with performers from their community and explore creating their own connections and networks for future projects. It employs a workshop environment and emphasizes facilitating resources for community members, including access to the insights and on-site performance feedback from local performers. It has offered free children-oriented and all ages events at Urbana Free Library, Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center, University of Illinois, and Urbana High School.
All Score Urbana is free to the public thanks to an Urbana Arts and Culture Grant, and has received support from College Music Society’s CMS Seed Grant Award, an Urbana Arts and Culture in Schools Grant, Urbana High School Orchestras, Kickstarter Fundraising, and the University of Illinois 2017 Theodore Presser Graduate Music Award. Created by composer Ralph Lewis in 2016, All Score teaching artists have included Elara String Quartet, harpist Molly O’Roark, Standard Rep Bassoon Quartet, DuoMotive’s Michelle Li and Mike McAndrew, saxophonist/composer Nick Ortiz, and other musicians from the Champaign-Urbana area.
