I don’t know who needs to hear this but… Every single plastic toothbrush you have ever had is still on this earth. Most of the waste you think you are recycling is not actually being recycled. We do not have the infrastructure to actually recycle what should be recycled and most of the plastic we use not able to be recycled or is not recycled because it’s either dirty or something silly like the labels are not taken off properly. Micro-plastics are literally everywhere. It’s not because Costa-Rican people are wasteful or negligent. It’s because as a whole we live in a single-use world where all of our toys, hygiene products and useless packaging is made from earth-killing plastics that we have literally no way of disposing. Costa Rica is an extremely progressive country. Despite deforestation rates, Costa Rica has restored over 50% of its rainforest and its covered in 75% rainforest to this day. This problem starts in every single one of our homes and it ends at our oceans. Strong tides bring this plastic waste to safe havens and homes of baby sea turtles, breeding grounds and beautiful nature reserves like you’re seeing in this picture. Here’s what we can do: - put in your effort to clean these areas when you travel - buy compostable products -eat sustainable(vegetable based)and locally sourced foods -refuse single use plastics (even if you forget your reusable bag) -stop constantly consuming and purchasing new things(your old shoes still look cute) -shop small -go solar -grow your own produce/raise chickens -write your local politicians and ask them to help outlaw single-use plastics like grocery bags and utensils -teach your children Unfortunately our government will not do its part. It’s up to us to evolve and do the hard work and research to fix this problem. I am filling at least one of reusable produce bags with plastic sea-trash a day.
