As we approach Thanksgiving, we had some questions about turkeys. Anyone else wonder about the bird itself vs as the holiday's main course?

🦃 Did you know the wild turkey have called North America home for over 11 million years? These iconic birds, closely tied to Thanksgiving traditions, have a history far richer than the holiday itself.

🇺🇲 In fact, Benjamin Franklin suggested the turkey be the national bird, but in the end the honor went to the bald eagle. 🦅

✨ In ancient Aztec culture, turkeys were seen as the embodiment of the trickster god Tezcatlipoca, with their feathers used in spiritual practices and as adornments. The Navajo were among the first to domesticate them, and turkeys have been a vital food source for centuries.

🌎 However, wild turkeys nearly vanished in the early 1900s due to overhunting and deforestation during westward expansion. Thanks to conservation efforts, their populations have rebounded to about 7 million today, with around 18% of California now home to these resilient birds.

Their comeback is a conservation success—but their role in California’s ecosystems sparks ongoing debate. What do you think about the wild turkey's place in our modern environment? 🤔
