** LAKE EFFECT SNOW RETURNS TO NORTHWESTERN PENNSYLVANIA **

After a week or so with a break from the relentless lake-effect snow, the incoming cold blasts combined with relatively warmer lake water temperatures will allow for continued lake-effect snow across much of northwestern Pennsylvania beginning Wednesday through Friday. While this will be nothing compared to the outbreak in late November and early December, some disruptions to travel are expected throughout the time period.

Most Likely Periods of Snowfall:
Wednesday afternoon/evening
Thursday evening
Friday morning through the evening

If you are planning to travel throughout these zones during the latter half of the week, be on alert for rapidly changing weather conditions. Lake effect snowfall bands may be localized, with some areas receiving heavier snowfall while others only flurries. Drive carefully and reduce speeds when traveling in a heavier lake effect band.

Lake effect snow will likely continue into the weekend, although I will have more updates regarding the potential later in the week. This forecast is in effect until Friday evening.

Stay tuned for updates!

Santa is on the move friends! 🎅🦌

12/23/2024

Heavy snow is expected overnight along and near Interstate 80. Although there is high confidence that snow amounts in the Interstate 80 area should remain at or below three inches, the heavy snow will fall in a short time period (just a few hours), leading to rapid buildup on roads. In the ridges, a brief burst of snow is possible just before sunrise, with a rapid transition to a prolonged period of freezing drizzle, which could lead to a light glaze of ice by late Tuesday morning.

242 PM EST Mon Dec 23 2024
..WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 9 PM THIS EVENING TO 5 AM EST TUESDAY...

* WHAT...Brief heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulation up to three inches.

* WHERE...Portions of northwestern and western Pennsylvania.

* WHEN...From 9 PM this evening to 5 AM EST Tuesday.

* IMPACTS...Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous as snow falls at a high rate over a few hours. Plan on slippery road conditions.

** UPDATED SNOWFALL FORECAST **

Snow will overspread much of central and northern Pennsylvania Sunday afternoon through the overnight hours, bringing a few inches across the majority of the areas affected. Snow will begin to overspread central Pennsylvania between 12-4pm before beginning to pick up in intensity by 6pm. The most steady period of snow will be between 6pm - 12am. Expect rough travel across this region, due to cold surface temperatures and moderate snowfall rates at times. Icing is expected across the Laurel Highlands, especially in elevations greater than 1800ft across south-central Pennsylvania, where 0.1-0.3" of freezing rain accretion will be possible.

Precipitation could change to freezing drizzle after 2am as warm air aloft takes over the state south-to-north with surface temperatures remaining at or below freezing. The Monday morning commute could be slick in many areas, although not terrible. Temperatures will warm into the mid-to-upper 30s by Monday afternoon as another system moves in bringing regular, cold rain.

Stay tuned for continued updates!

** INCREASED SNOW SQUALL RISK TONIGHT - TOMORROW MORNING **

An incoming strong cold front will usher in the risk for snow squalls late tonight through tomorrow morning, aiding in the risk of hazardous travel. Read the full post for all of the details!

BEST TIMING:
Western PA: 12am - 5 am
Central PA: 3 am - 8 am
Eastern PA: 6 am - 12pm
*Snow squalls may linger into the day tomorrow as well, so be on alert for rapidly changing conditions*

What is a snow squall? A snow squall is a brief burst (5-30min in length) of very heavy snowfall and higher winds. Think of it as a thunderstorm, but of it as all snow. These squalls quickly come and go, and may put travelers at risk with changes in road conditions in as little as 5 minutes or less.

If you are planning to travel tonight through tomorrow morning, be on alert for these snow squalls. Exact snow squalls are hard to predict, as they are generally localized and hit-and-miss. Although a stronger snow squall may move through the state between 3-9am with the cold front, with hit-and-miss snow squalls before and after this passage.

Snow squalls can cause whiteout conditions and may make for dangerous travel, even with temperatures above freezing. Falling snow may melt at first, but falling temperatures may freeze over roadways and cause for very hazardous driving.

If you are caught in a snow squall while driving, take it slow and make smart decisions. Do not hard break and do not speed! If you are able to receive snow squall warnings ahead of time, pull over safely until the snow squall passes. Snow squalls have been known to cause multiple vehicle pileups and unfortunately fatalities in previous winters. These all can be avoided with the safety of your driving!

Stay tuned and feel free to follow for more updates!
