Snapdragons from Mexico looking amazing this week. When I first opened our storefront I thought for sure it would be doable to have all American grown or local product in my shop in winter. Seems every box of flowers I tried to order ended up delayed in shipping and unusable no matter the source. It had something to do with the area I’m in….I found this out because a sales rep finally said to me “are you in an area where things get delayed or arrive on time”….ah now you tell me. I’m not going to lie that having to use my local wholesaler gave me so much guilt and anxiety at first…after all we grow tons of flowers and use sustainable tools and methodology…but couldn’t get American grown flowers? We even debated whether to even offer them out of our growing season…. But in the end our customers still want flowers from us no matter where they came from because it still supports us growing in the summer. So to be safe I grab blooms on my way to work to keep the cooler stocked. I’ll keep trying American grown boxes but I will wait till the danger of freezing the blooms subsides :)
Speaking of winter flowers our valentines pre-orders are live and ready to go and I was going to add some bloom variety pictures but we have orders coming in already so I thought I might as well tell ya in the meantime. Thanks to those who found it already without me saying anything, that’s pretty awesome. 🩷

Happy 50th to Sunborn!!!!!! Cheers to 50 years of hands in the soil. Cheers to all of you that have either worked with us or bought from us! 50 years ago my mother in law brought vegetables and a bucket of marigolds to the Dane County Farmers Market and realized that the flowers were far more popular. That’s it. That’s how it started. From there her only focus was cut flowers. The evolution of Sunborn has been anything but easy. I’m proud of all we have accomplished and will continue to share more of our story in this new year!

Hans and I decided we are not going to the farmers market this week instead we will have everything in shop and have extended shopping hours! We will still be working away at dried flowers and fresh evergreen goodies but this also means you can shop all the cute gifts in shop!

Been weaving wreaths this week for market. We are only going to be at the Dec 7th and Dec 14th markets before the holidays. Wreaths live in the shop until Friday night if you want to grab any early :) danecofm

This winter we wanted to go back to the winter market at monona terrace on Saturdays. It’s part of who we are as a family. My kids grew up around it. Doing event production work all season it seemed kind to myself to simply make flowers to sell at market. We will be busy running the shop and doing deliveries until the holidays. I had Hans harvest evergreens to make some harvest-y bunches this week…evergreen, dogwood, preserved leaves, and eucalyptus. Shops looking cute with new vintage and second hand, handmade goods, gifts, decor and such.

Hi friends! We are having a rough go at September. This is our second market we had to miss this month due to illness in the family. We have tended these flowers all season and harvested so many already but Hans and I are sick and can’t go. Unfortunately an owner has to be present at our market stand and that’s either Hans or I. Carol will be in our shop today and tomorrow I invite you to come check out our cute store. Fresh flowers, second hand, vintage, plants, and cute gifts are all stocked! 😘

Let’s talk about a la carte floral. We heard a lot of feedback today at market how we are no longer offering this wedding service. Ooof. I wish I could do it forever. I feel like I finally was in the swing of it with the chosen palettes and limited menu but I’m only one person. There were a million reasons we needed to change but the biggest is to avoid burnout. I needed to choose full service or a la carte, not both. Since it’s not guaranteed to have that many inquires a week to switch to an a la carte only model the choice was clear but not easy. A la carte weddings were 30% of our sales each season but as the only person in my company that does the quotes, the flower ordering, the emails, the admin….its a lot to have 80 couples to correspond with. I always find talented hands to help me design the flowers but never have I had anyone else leading the rest. If one day another designer wants to lead their own events at Sunborn that could change,but for now Im only taking full service events.
I am really excited to reduce the number of weddings I take next season in order to better serve my clients and my family. I am forever grateful to still have the privilege to make beautiful flowers for my career.💐🩷

You guys, these zinnia are incredible. To be fair Hans grows incredible zinnia…succession planting, white landscape cloth, starting indoors, wide spacing etc. We won’t have them in big numbers until late August market. For now they have just started and are saved for our wedding couples. I bought a large amount of seed but Hans was not willing to do such a large trial patch (understandable) so I was lucky to get 100 feet.

Phew! What a season so far! We have hustled hard and done so many beautiful flowers. It’s time for a break to rejuvenate those creative forces. Hans and I are taking a week with the kids and will be back in it July 15th. The shop will be open as my co designers work on small events but no promises on regular hours until we are back. Thanks for coming out to support us at market yesterday. Carol is always so happy to go and sell out…after all it was her that started sunborn with that very market 49 years ago. 🩷
