Today I finished tagging all 150 dahlia plants. Next week I’ll start to dig them up and divide. It’s a long process and will take me about 4 weeks to get done. You can wait to dig up your dahlias until the first hard frost that kills the flowers. Since I have many plants to dig up and tubers to divide, I start the process earlier.

I still have dahlias (I think…depending on tonight’s weather). Pictured is a sampling of what I brought inside this evening. This week is the last one to order dahlias for the year. Message me to get that last order in!

October is when all the dahlias are finally blooming.

Depending on the dahlia, they can take anywhere from 60-120 days to bloom after planting.

In our area, the next few weeks brings on all the blooms. It’s always exciting when the last of the dahlia buds finally open to reveal long awaited flowers.

This dahlia smells like chocolate! 🍫

This dahlia is known as Karma Chocolate. It is one of the only dahlias that has a scent.

Last year I tried to purchase this tuber and it repeatedly sold out every single time.

Miraculously it appeared as an extra free tuber in a huge order of tubers I purchased from a farm out west.

Last year Karma Chocolate produced barely any tubers. I replanted all of them in hopes of building my stock of this flower. These three blooms just opened last week.

Now I understand why these tubers are so rare and expensive to purchase. They don’t produce many tubers AND they smell like chocolate.

I’ll continue to work on building my stock so I can share. Even though they’re a challenging flower to grow, the chocolate scent and rich velvety petals make it worth it.

Today was the last day of dahlia subscriptions and the final week of subscriptions for the 2024 season.

This year I offered 10 weeks of floral subscriptions. There was 3 weeks of tulips in April/May, 3 weeks of roses in July, and 4 weeks of dahlias in September. I’ve enjoyed getting to know new people through this venture and appreciate all the kind words of encouragement and pictures of flowers in your home.

Thank you for giving me a chance and supporting my flower farm. It means the world to me!

If you weren’t able to get a subscription but would still like some flowers, there’s still time to order. I offer bouquets, arrangements, and pumpkins topped with florals. All options are available until the end of October.

Happy 1st day of Fall! 🍁 🍂

Now that fall is here, I’m gearing up to offer these pretty floral topped pumpkins.

This design features all of the seasons best florals from the farm arranged around the pumpkin stem. This makes for a great centerpiece or a nice gift. I know a few teachers received these as gifts last year!

This is a very technical design and takes some time to put together. I’ll need at least 2 days notice to have this ready for pickup.

The dahlias are pumping out blooms and today is week 3 of subscription pickup at ReFabulous Furnishings.

At dropoff today someone excitedly exclaimed, “Ohhhhh!! What is that flower? It’s soooo pretty!” I happily replied, “It’s celosia flamingo feather!” 🦩 🪶

I love it when people get excited about flowers. It’s FUN to share in the enthusiasm for all things flowers. 😄

The roses are starting to open again. The fall flush brings about deep saturated colors. Although there are much less blooms this time of year, I appreciate the vivid hues that smell even better than they look!

This season ushers in planning for next year. I take notes on what worked, identify changes and make adjustments for the following season.

So far I’ve ordered tulips, anemones, asciatic lilies, and hydrangeas. My goal for next year is to have multiple long lasting florals for my rose subscription in July.

It’s going to be a busy 2 months as I plant bulbs, corms, and perennials for next season. I’ll be prepping the roses for winter by spreading a fresh layer of compost. Also labeling dahlias, digging, dividing, and storing. There’s lots of tasks to be completed but it’s all worth it for another year of flowers. 🌸 🌼🌷

I collect dahlias almost daily. They still surprise me with their intricate colors and forms. Each dahlia unique on its own but elevated when paired with other contrasting blooms.

Contrast creates balance in each gathering of blooms.

The Apple Blossom dahlia is a unique bloom that is known as a collarette variety.

In what insiders call the dahlia wars, this tuber often sells out as soon as a flower farm’s tuber sale goes live.

I was fortunate to score a single tuber last year. The plant barely grew and didn’t produce a single flower. I dug it up in the fall and discovered that it had multiplied into 2 tubers. I divided them, put them in winter storage and replanted this year.

The plants really struggled under pest pressure. Slugs devoured the tiny leaves and it barely grew over 18” tall. I gave up on Apple Blossom. It seemed like a difficult variety to grow despite all the hype.

Today I was pushing a wheelbarrow full of weeds up the hill when this beautiful bloom caught my eye. I peered over the fence and couldn’t believe it! Apple Blossom had FINALLY produced a single bloom. I hurried over to find this happy little flower hanging by a wirey stem. I also noticed 2 more buds forming on the plants!

Perhaps the wait was worth it. This flower is like a breath of sunshine smiling in its little bud vase. Although it’s not robust enough for bouquets, I think it could be added to mason jar arrangements. What do you think about Apple Blossom?

Dahlia bouquets look beautiful in one vase but can be fun to take apart and put in several smaller vases. This way you can place groups of flowers throughout the home. It feels like walking through an art gallery of flowers.

It’s week 2 of dahlia bouquet subscriptions and I’m in love with all these color combos.

What a beautiful season of flowers. I’ve been mindful this week to cut a few extra stems for bud vases. Dahlias are the most lovely flowers and only make their appearance for about 2 months of the year! I’m enjoying every single day with these beauties.

There’s something about the cooler weather and the moody colors of fall that conveys warmth and comfort. The rich colors in the garden under the golden evening sunsets are what I’ll remember in winter.

Have you heard of David Austin roses? These English roses are renowned for their sheer beauty and fragrance. I grow many varieties and enjoy adding them to arrangements. The Irises are blooming! I’ve always been mesmerized by the shape and form of this flower. The delicate ruffled petals draws the eye into a triangular pattern. They seem to shimmer in the sunlight creating a velvety effect. #springflowers #iris #gardens #gardening

What is blooming? Right now the gardens are in the mid phase between spring and summer flowers. The tulips and daffodils have made their debut. Now a few flowers in bloom keep us in anticipation of the ripening peonies and irises getting ready to open. Meanwhile the roses and poppies are busy loading up on buds that will put on their first flush in mid to late June.

This evening I visited my parents house and took a stroll through their yard. They have several varieties of crab apple trees, lilacs, and a beautiful viburnum shrub.
