I started my wedding career, maybe a tad naive but certainly ambitiously, not too long after I had graduated from college. Social media (for business) wasn’t a thing back then. Nor were there the amount of resources available to those of us not in major large markets.

I worked hard to gain the trust of my clients that I could present and execute a uniquely refined design even in the small college town market I was based in at the time. Wanting to up-level my work had a lot of uphill battles to climb, but I was committed to being able to bring something special to my area.

I’ve met lots of wedding planners and designers at this same point in their careers, feeling discouraged at what career growth they can expect when they don’t have the advantages of a large metropolitan market.

This tented wedding design is now five years old and it’s still one of our most commented, saved, shared and otherwise loved designs. It was produced in that very same small college town I started my career in 15+ years ago.

To my fellow planner and designers - this one’s for you! When I founded with and in 2020 with the goal of creating an open and transparent space for our industry, I didn’t know we’d find ourselves still doing that nearly four years (!!!) later. What’s come from that time has been nothing short of personally enriching and friendships I’d never have otherwise.

Within that space, Wendy and I teamed up and hosted a four-hour, nothing held back, completely transparent mini course on both of our design processes. From budgeting, to how we build our creative teams, to presenting the design and ex*****on, we wanted to give fellow planners and designers the tools and confidence to create their own portfolio anchoring and client raving designs - with particular focus on tented designs.

If you didn’t know, fall is my season. Not just October, but fall. All of it. There’s simply no getting over the colors and textures working together the way this season does it - for me. Lucky for me, plenty of our couples agree and lean into those textures with our amazing creatives who get this feeling too. It’s a win-win-win.

There’s a lot of origin stories for people in our industry of going through their own weddings which got them hooked on celebrating love as a profession. I can’t claim that exact story, but it certainly informs my perspective.

About this time 20 years ago, I was was in the midst of planning my own wedding. Things were a tad different back then…

What I cherish the most from my wedding planning was is the process of creating my dress. My mother, an immensely talented seamstress who had four daughters and loved making clothes for us, was probably more excited than I was to be able to make my dress. It was basically family canon that she’d make our wedding dresses when the time came and I was the first of my sisters to get that chance. We collaborated for eight months creating a prototype, picking the fabric, editing the proportions and fit, even the equation to get the beading grid around the bodice just right.

I know my dress isn’t what someone would chose now. Styles and trends change of course. But I still am in love with my dress and most of all having the experience with my mom to create it.

I don’t meet many people as emotionally attached to their wedding dress as I am. But they might find that connection to the location of their wedding, maybe the land itself is deeply meaningful or the jewelry passed down to wear or music that is played. Whatever that thing is, hold tight to it - and most of all - celebrate with it.

Setting vintage vibes for a gathering in New York next week… many times inspiration for an event comes from your location and this party is no exception. But I’ve found that you cannot create a mood until there are people inserted into the mix. Any event, be it a wedding, a milestone celebration, a launch or a brand activation, is a living thing because of the people involved. It’s not a static designed room (as amazing as those are) that you see on any given browse through your feed. It’s the people that make the event come alive.

As we bid adieu to summer, let’s appreciate when seasons don’t have to be a rule in your design. It’s wheels up for summer travel! I’m headed back to - one of my favorite places in the world. How are we coming up on the second anniversary of K+R’s absolutely perfect day there?? Fun fact: I was prepared for their day to be battling South Carolina’s July heat, but I was proved entirely wrong when at ceremony time, it’s a gorgeous 75 degrees. I can’t claim special powers over the weather, but I can say our couples are highly favored in that respect 😘

When we started working with K+R on their destination wedding, they were flexible on location, but wanted a spot that would split the difference between where the bulk of their guests would be coming from on the east coast. Knowing their love for welcoming southern hospitality and graceful landscapes, I knew there was only one place that would fit: Montage Palmetto Bluff. We scheduled a site visit and from the moment we stepped on the property, every box was checked. As K told us, “I didn’t know I could love a place so much. Deciding on a destination for your wedding can come down to one of two things: immediately settled on based on a connection you have to the location or… the world is your oyster. For the those in the second category, that’s why we keep our travel calendars stacked with seeing as many locations we can to be able to guide our couples to their perfect spot. So when the gracious team at Belmond El Encanto invited us to see their property, we jumped at the chance. Celebrating all things spring as we move into this Easter weekend with a look at ’s daffodil spread we got to be a small part of. While You’ve Got Mail’s Kathleen Kelly might have claimed that the daisy is the friendliest flower, I would argue that stylist/floral designer places the daffodil firmly in that spot. Bright and cheery, find me dressing more than our bookcase that she meticulously worked on with these sweet blooms. An interesting question recently came across my inbox from our friends at : What is the difference between a Welcome Party and a Post Toast? Spoiler alert: there’s not much difference except for your own preference (you can read more about that on our blog today). But what truly hit home for me was that whatever you want to call your day-before-the-wedding events, the point is maximizing your time spent with the people you love most. It’s gathering those around you while you celebrate your love that make the memories of your wedding. And to that we say, let’s do it all!

Taking a personal turn on the blog today. When it comes to design, interiors have always been an influence on how I approach a wedding design. This is exemplified by a wedding hosted at a personal residence as the design of the home will be the foundation of the wedding design. But more than that, I wanted to dive into why interiors relate so much to how our clients celebrate, how wedding inspiration (for me) lives in the interior design world and how a design is meant to support the celebration, not overshadow it.
