Today we’re diving into our building’s heritage! The Victorian Era charm of our space in downtown ignites our imagination and inspires us to learn more about our roots! 📝

Valentine’s Day in the Victorian Era was nothing short of . In a time where romance was nurtured by the many advancements made in the 19th century, Valentine’s Day was celebrated with each and every year! Many Victorians spent time curating elegant Valentine’s Day cards early into Queen Victoria’s reign, while mass-produced cards began to take over by the year 1900. Despite technological advancements in printing, many Victorians cherished cards over mass-produced ones. The tradition of creating sentimental cards by hand transcends time as we see many people continue this craft today!

Handcrafting the most elegant cards in this period was the best way to show your care and devotion to your love interest! Victorians spent an incredible amount of time and creativity ensuring that their card stood out amongst the thousands that were being sent around this holiday! Can you imagine being the recipient of one of these beautiful cards roughly 170 years ago? 💘

Valentine’s Day was a time to celebrate romance with elegance in the . It was an opportunity to share declarations of love while keeping unwanted suitors away! Not only were keepsake cards created for lovers, but so were unsavory notes of dislike to undesirable admirers! The thought and dedication behind creating Valentine’s Day cards during this time period is nearly unheard of today! We like to imagine what it might’ve felt like to receive a love note from an admirer back in the late 1800’s! Or even to meet in McElvain House’s original restaurant for a Valentine’s Day date! 💌

Since its very beginning in #1872, our space has been filled with such rich history of sentimental gatherings spent with friends and family! We love that our space has been used to create amazing memories over the years, one of which is this beautiful that took place in our very own Merritt Harper room in 1988. 💍

We are ready to encourage a whole new generation of loving memories spent in our space. Engagement season is upon us and we’re at the edge of our seats, ready to hear your proposal stories and to coordinate any future parties, bridal showers or intimate weddings! 🥂

"Ho, ho, ho" and Happy Holidays! This year's Christmas in the 'Burg festival was so much fun! We loved being in the heart of our historic downtown with front row seats to our incredible parade - made up of floats and participants from throughout our community.

We were home to the "Children's Elf Workshop" hosted by the Vicksburg Cultural Arts Center in our Merritt Harper event space. The banquet room was transformed to a children's holiday workshop for making ornaments and holiday crafts. The versatility of our historic hospitality space that range from boutique private events to large-scale community gatherings is so wonderful!

We have decked our halls with holiday in preparation for the many and festivities that’ll be taking place on Saturday. One tradition in particular is the Annual Elf Workshop hosted by Vicksburg Arts! This family-friendly event will take place right inside our building in The Merritt Harper room from 2-5p this Saturday!🎄
