Digital & Film—The Best of Both Worlds 🎞📸

There’s something special about the way film photography preserves a moment—the texture, the depth, the nostalgia. While I use digital photography to capture every detail of a wedding day with precision, I also bring along my trusty Pentax K1000 to capture a few frames in a way that feels raw, timeless, and intentional.

The Pentax K1000, once toted by Ringo Starr to document life, has stood the test of time, and I love incorporating it into wedding days. With only 36 frames per roll, every shot requires thought, patience, and a deep appreciation for the art of storytelling.

I love bringing my 35mm film camera to sessions—it helps me slow down and be truly intentional about what I’m capturing. With only 36 frames per roll, each shot requires thought, patience, and a bit of trust in the process.

When I shoot film, I find myself paying even closer attention to the light, the emotion, and the little details that make a moment special. It’s not about getting as many photos as possible—it’s about making each one count.

I took these frames during a couples session after their ceremony in San Marcos, capturing a few quiet, beautiful moments on film. There’s just something about film that feels timeless, and I love being able to offer that to my couples.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned from shooting film and digital together is how to be quick without rushing—intentional without hesitation.

Film forces you to trust your instincts. With only 36 frames per roll, there’s no endless clicking, no do-overs—just reading the light, framing the shot, and capturing the moment with precision.

Over the years, I’ve developed a rhythm that lets me move fast while staying thoughtful, making sure I get the shot without overthinking it. It’s this balance of speed and intention that I love bringing to wedding days, creating images that feel both timeless and effortless.

One of my favorite ways to start a wedding day is by easing into the space rather than jumping right in with a camera in everyone’s face. I usually arrive a little early, pop in to say hi, and then quietly start capturing the details—the dress, shoes, jewelry, and anything else meaningful to the couple.

This approach allows me to blend into the room naturally, giving everyone time to get comfortable with my presence before I start working with people. It’s a smooth and easy transition, making the experience feel effortless and fun!

I first met Brianna & Seth when they hired me to photograph their wedding at the San Diego Library years ago. At the time, my wife and I were expecting our own little one—fast forward, and now they are about to welcome a baby girl of their own!

We met at Tamarack Beach in Carlsbad for a stunning golden-hour maternity session, capturing the joy and anticipation of this beautiful chapter in their lives.

Did you know? Brown Pelicans are one of the few pelican species that plunge-dive from up to 60 feet to catch fish! 🎣 Their throat pouches can hold up to 3 gallons of water before they drain it and swallow their catch whole.
